Reliable, lightweight, much simpler than a turbo, much more driveable than an LS swap ... The longer this tab stays open, the closer I am to having an engine shipped to my door.
Unfortunately without a garage it’s basically “gather all the parts, take to a shop, brutally murder wallet”.
But I still think getting a Volvo is a higher priority. Need something to DD while the Miata gets turned into a non-running project for a while...
Speaking of Cheap Volvo’s... Manual, turbo, wagon, owned by two Volvo fanatics in a row, tons of maintenance records?

Take a look at these kits as well.

This, so very much. I would love to drop one of these (with the matching 6-speed) into my El Camino. Over twice the horsepower and almost 25% more torque than the stock 305 - and it would probably push 30 MPG on the highway. (Also significantly better than the stock 305.)

Oh lord... As awesome as that is, if I'm dropping a ton of cash on an engine swap I want something that's tried and tested within the Miata community.

Listing for V6, uses V8 image .

That picture and your first sentence confused the hell out of me until I clicked the link and saw they were selling a V6 with a picture of a V8.

You should do an s2k swap like that BaT listing! I wonder how much that cost that guy...

Yeah I think they just default to the highest trim engine available

If they send me an LS3 for the LFX price I wouldn’t even be mad

Probably as much as a budget LS swap. Those F20's aren’t cheap...
But seriously, if I end up doing a swap within the next few years, I want something that sounds good and makes decent power, sorry S2k *ducks*
(edit) I should clarify, I absolutely adore the F20c but I don't think I'd ever swap it into anything other than maybe a clean Civic hatch?

That Volvo... you could do a lot worse for $2,700. A LOT worse.

I’d l ove to replace the 350 in mine with one as well. I’d probably keep it as an auto because I like having one car that doesn’t have three pedals.

Naturally aspirated 4 cylinder Hondas don’t really shine in anything over ... say, 3000 lbs?
(cue yo momma jokes)

Why is an LS undrivable?

have you considered the 1uz? it makes somewhere close to 300hp, and has a nice usable rpm range........

I’ve been eyeing those as well for my long-long-term Exocet plans. An LS feels like overkill given the chassis’s low weight and inherent tire and aero difficulties, so an easy, naturally aspirated 300/300 from a modern engine like that sounds just about perfect. The successes of that LFX time attack Miata being run by Ryan from Goodwin Racing only keeps adding fuel to the fire. There’s just that matter of the “brutally murder wallet” part, considering it’d likely run scarily close to the amount
I paid for the car to begin with...

Too much power to really be a realistic DD in a Miata. The LFX seems to be the sweet spot. I’ve already got brakes/suspension/ tires to handle that level of power, but if I went LS... I would have to throw a ton of money at brakes/wheels/tires for the car to be even slightly manageable.

I’ve eyeba lled that wagon a few times on CL. If it were closer I’d take a look, but it’s got a few more miles than I’m really comfortable with.

Have you read through Ryan’s build thread, all the way back to the NA going on weekend races with a stock drivetrain? Basically my biggest inspiration in the entire car world.
My thoughts exactly as far as the LS. I know there's a spreadsheet somewhere of Ryan's total cost for the build. It was actually pretty reasonable, but of course he did it himself and had plenty of support

I’m going to offer him 2300. Won’t be too upset if I don’t get a response. Not having to use the Miata on nasty, wet days would be nice, but I still want to hold out for an R

Go check it out first... Nothing is more off-putting than a text offer from someone who hasn’t even seen the car. Besides, if he takes the time to meet up with you, he’s invested in the sale too and much more likely to negotiate. $2,300 isn’t an unreasonable lowball, though.

I caught a few of the older posts before the swap and started following along once the LFX transplant was underway. It’s been impressive, to say the least. I seem to have missed the spreadsheet, but after going back to find it, that’s not as bad as I thought! I’d still probably have to hire a good portion of that effort out though since my cramped garage isn’t exactly conducive to larger DIY efforts.

This one is also incredibly tempting

I love the three pedals too much. But we have two automatics in the family, too, so I can enjoy this one without it being a chore.

That one hasn't shown up in my searches because automatic. Looks damn good, though! Definitely NP.

I’m still disappointed that the 850 is FWD because they pop up more than pretty much any other wagon in manual form.

Idk, the one time I heard a k swapped Miata I was completely fucking hooked on LS alternatives. They were offering rides to people at Miatas At The Gap while I was there but sadly I didn't get a chance to. Yeah that's not the same motor but it was just so damn good.

I really doubt the extra 46 HP and lbs-ft are going to affect the drivability. Also, yeah, no, it drives just fine. Trust me. Just go with an LS1. It’s a better platform.

I’ve driven an LFX powered Miata. It was perfection, but already a bit scary in a completely anolog car that weighed about 2200 lbs. I’m not really sure that more power would help.
That said... I've never driven an LS-swapped Miata so you could be right!
![]() 10/11/2018 at 22:02 |

Me too, but I think it could be a fine comfort/style-focused DD while the Miata goes full-on crazy.
The R is awd at least, but no manual option...
![]() 10/12/2018 at 06:52 |

More power is always better!
I’m not saying the LFX swap is a bad idea, but the LS1 is such an easy motor to live with...

I have the downside of hating how FWD behaves in the snow, so letting it pass by on a “it’ll be a nice daily” doesn’t work for me. Still cool, though! Good luck!
