I hop on Craigslist looking for drift missiles (procedure: go to craigslist, click cars + trucks, filter for RWD and manual, see what pops up) and this pops up not far from me. I got to drive and autocross my Dad’s BRZ on Sunday, confirming my belief that there is one in my near future.
This ticks all the right boxes. Clean, un modified, manual, spoiler, fog lights, low miles. The cherry on top is the fact that it is Galaxy Blue Silica, my favorite Subaru color ever. Dammit, if it was 10 months from now I would be all over this.

Why do I do this to myself? That blue is so pretty...

I’ve been toying with picking up a Toyobaru as well. Finding an unmodified manual transmission
with a clean title
on my CL has been been a bust so far
. If that were near me I’d be seriously considering it.

Me everytime I look at a used car website.

what a poser though with the replica M3 front and rear bumpers and hood.

This is why I don’t look anymore

My Mini is starting to give me some signs that I can’t expect it to be reliable for much longer (various leaks starting to pop up, transmission starting to develop a very slight whine in 3rd and 4th, drivers door lock actuator failed, passengers on it’s way out, motor/ trans mount failing, etc) so I am seriously in the market for a newer car next summer once I graduate.

There’s a few nice examples of BRZs and FRSs on craigslist and autotrader here in New England.
I know, I’m doing this to myself.

The problem is that my Dad, his friend, and I are actively in the market for a drift car so it makes sense for me to be poking around. The issue is that I am now convinced my next car is going to be a BRZ but won’t have the resources to make a purchase until late next summer once I graduate.

Aah. Even my lower engine mount is on the way out, 3rd 4th are just a tiny bit crunchy, passenger side window motor is sticking, probably some more than i’m forgetting. The SC whine and the good handling make me wanna keep it forever tho.
That said, I’ll be in the market next year too for another car. The current car that I like is a E39 540 . That will allow me to go crazy on the mini from a financial and performance standpoint.

I still love driving my Mini but after paying $1,200 to fix a bunch of oil leaks I am beginning to question the viability of continuing to daily drive it. It’s got almost 155k on it so it’s only going to get less reliable from here. After doing a couple autocrosses in RWD cars I am starting to feel that a BRZ would simply be a better fit for me than the aging Mini.

I like this one: https://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/cto/d/bmw-m3/6720038989.html
Then again I may be biased since 100% of my drifting experience is in M3 swapped 318Tis.

Mine has been fairly easy to maintain even with 195k miles. I had to spend around $2k fixing the suspension bushings, tie rods and a bearing but I guess that will happen with any 170k miles car, especially one driven in Michigan. Oil usage has been fairly consistent over the 30k miles that Ive owned it, 1qt per 2500 miles.
I’ll never buy/drive a NA 86, going from the SC Mini to the 86's 3000 to 5000 rpm torque dip is physically painful. And if im getting a car that is just an autocross/track car then there are cheaper alternatives.
Have you thought about a 3 4 year old ND miata and putting a SC kit on it? The kit is $6k IIRC.

I have considered the Miata but I’m just not into convertibles. I prefer having a fixed roof over my head. I currently drive an NA Mini so the BRZ feels really torquey in comparison (though I will admit I have not driven a pre facelift BRZ yet). My dad’s 2017 BRZ pulls better at 2500 and 50% throttle than my Mini does at 5000 flat out.
The Mini (and thus any replacement for the Mini) is a daily driver in addition to being my autocross and track toy. Thus I would be hesitant to do any serious modding and ruining it as a daily driver. It would likely stay stock except for some sticky tires and maybe upgraded brake pads.

Drive a SC Mini if possible, it really does pull hard (for its size ) from 3000rpm (25 00 if it has a detroittuned bypass valve like mine ). And the whine is just too addictive :) The new exhaust makes it sound like a rally car too, complete with pops and bangs .
My plan is to have a fun daily with minimal mods and a weekend car that is fairly moded. Depends on what I buy next if Mini will be the daily or weekend.

I have driven an R52 S before and while the added power and whine is tons of fun I didn’t really see a reason to upgrade from the R50 to an S. I have just reached a point where I have driven the Mini for over 2 years and now have a need to scratch the RWD itch. I would love to keep the Mini around so I can go nuts and cage it for Rally/track use but I don’t think that is going to be in the cards.

Buy a second car that is RWD? I know I will.

Its doubtful that I will have parking for 2 cars but if I do the Mini will be sticking around.

Are those 2015 exhaust tips stuck on the end of the 13 tips? Because they sure don’t stick out that far on the 15.
Also every time I see a BRZ with the tow hook plate mount I can’t help but wonder if the owner has lost the tow hook cover yet.
Also also, is it me or does it look like the spare has been used?
![]() 10/10/2018 at 21:42 |

They are 15 tips on the 13 exhaust which should be an easy fix. The tips and the gas door would be the first things I would change on the car. I would honestly prefer a missing tow hook cover over holes drilled in the bumper. I can’t tell if the spare has been used or not without seeing the tread but it appears to still have matching Primacies on all 4 corners so I don’t see it being an issue if it has gotten a flat at some point.
Anyway it is all a moot point as I am disappointingly not in a position to jump on it. Hopefully another one just like this pops up in a year or so.

I do hate that fuel door

Yeah it’s easier for me since I just got locked into a 5 year auto loan in April and don’t have the resources for another car. I’m also in college and don’t have the space or anything for a project or fun car. So looking is just torturing myself since I won’t be getting a different car until about 3 years after I graduate unless I pay it off early.

Technically could be stock (well, dealer installed on a car pre sale) but still super ugly.

School is basically why I can't jump on this one. Once I graduate this spring and move to working full time I would be all over this.

Just when we were talking about the Mini’s reliability , the front right tie rod end is busted lol :D

That’s a great color! My wife said that she saw a BRZ in a “really cool blue” I showed her WR blue, lapis, and whatever they call their bright blue. She said it was none of those. Must have been this.

It’s easily my favorite color Subaru has ever done. Lapis is cool too but it isn’t nearly as deep as Galaxy Blue.
