Mine will both be 13 in 8 days. This game is so addictive, and they can get so ugly playing it. I’m not a fan. That’s why we ban it during the week. They can only play Fri-Sun. They’re only playing today because it’s a day off school.

How many stupid dance moves are involved in your daily life ? My kids don’t even play the game but they can do the dance moves.

At a soccer game my boy kicked a ball into another kids face while that kid was flossing instead of paying attention.

I hate to say the kid deserved it, but he deserved it.

the 11 year old is indifferent, he’d rather play Gran Turismo. The 9 year old is nuts over it. My 15 year old doesn’t like it...but he’s now obsessed with music and playing bass....it makes me quite happy he’s found something that doesn’t require a screen.

I think we can all agree that he deserved it and he should pay better attention but we also all know that no valuable lesson was learned that day.

My girl has a similar problem with her screen time. It’s astounding how well screen time models addictive behavior, including the grumpy reaction of withdrawal when you take it away.

My wife has had to listen to me expound at length about how I regret letter our daughter have a phone.  Fortunately, she is getting better at being regulated.

I’ve really never really understood this game. I only played it once but I didn’t see why it was fun or addicting in the slightest.

I have to drag my kids away from the screen to get them to practice.

Now my kids have tantrums when their computer lags and it’s my problem and I have to go buy them a new computer.

I have zero interest in it myself. I’m not sure why it’s so addictive.

Aw hell no.

Maybe we should go back to when we were kids. The video games were in an arcade you had to travel to, and you could only play them as long as your allowance money held out. Self-regulating.

When I was their age, there were no video games, at least not quite yet. But yes, at least I had to ride my bike to the neighborhood arcade. Back in those days, I got an allowance of $10/week. I had to buy my lunches out of that money, and lunch was $1/day. If I didn’t eat, I had more money. ( The thought of packing a lunch never occurred to me.) At one point, I got a raise to $12.50. I hopped on my bike and rode to the arcade and blew the $2.50 in short order. As I rode home, I realized that I was no further ahead for my raise, and stopped going to the arcade.

Some lessons are best learned empirically.

This is how we learned finances. I too had the same allowance deal. I did make a PB&J and pocketed the $1 a day.

In college, each week my room mate and I would go get a roll of quarters for laundry at the student union. We would then blow half of it in the arcade before even leaving the building. My poison was Joust or Galaga

I sucked at Joust, but really liked Galaga. I was a Pac-Man guy, though. I memorized the pattern and could play forever.

I’m i n the dads club at my girl’s school. At our last meeting, I found out there are companies that will partner with fund-raising groups like ours to place a game table, like Pac-Man, in bars or restaurants, if you can get the businesses to agree. Then, your group splits the proceeds (donations) with the company that owns the table. So, your habit would fund a good cause.

I now have versions of Joust and Galaga on my phone. Funny, I never play them.

I haven’t played it, but I just don’t see why the craze about it. It’s just a shooter, isn’t it?

Most shooters give me migraines anyway.  Only shooter I could ever play was Gears of War (which I admit I really enjoy).

My son is now taking guitar lessons. He’s not obsessed yet, but I’m hoping that it will give him another incentive to get away from the screen.

Two g ame s I loved dearly. We had a Galaga machine in the pizza parlor where I worked. I never took home tips that were paid in quarters.

Sounds familiar. The only games that have held my interest of late are the Lego titles on the PlayStation, particularly Star Wars. My wife and I finished both of the Harry Potter games. The newer ones, though, have just gotten too complex for me.

oddly enough, even with my influence, it was guitar hero/rock band that really scratched his itch...once that happened I gave him my gear and he’s off. It’s funny because he loves Metallica and is learning the same songs I learned at his age. His favorite song is Creeping Death so he does like the good stuff.

The only games I have on my phone are puzzle-based. Su do ku, Flow Free, and Picture Cross are the only ones I play regularly. It’s something I can put down immediately without regret.

My son does a lot of different things, but I can’t say he’s found anything to obsess about. It means his room is cluttered with hobbies he’s tried but they failed to capture his interest.

It seems to be sort of a mashup of FPS and Minecraft, in that you have to build defenses and high-ground shooting positions.

I get that, the 9 year old here is obsessed with football, but her 11 year old hasn’t really found his niche yet. He has a guitar as well but declined lessons over the summer.

I talked to the boys in my class (6th grade at the time) about the game, and their screen time/gaming behaviour in general. I started by showing them a Fortnite screenshot. It took them five minutes to calm down again, they were salivating like Pavlov dogs.

I’ve made a habit of playing the games my kids pick up just so I know what the heck is going on. When they were big into Minecraft, I set up a server at home so they had a place to play without having to deal with griefers, foul-mouthed kiddies, and porn sprays.

I’m fortunate that neither of my kids are obsessed with Fortnite. When they started talking about it, I installed it. As a gamer, I see the appeal, but I’m too old and slow to be competitive. I can still break into the top 10 on most matches just by being good at finding places to hide so I don’t get killed. :)

My daughter introduced my wife to this cross word game. Well, that’s crack to my wife. She’s been staying up late into the night on it lately. Sometimes we do it together. She’s on level 600-something now.

At least it’s not a total waste.

I’ve seen stuff on other studies showing gaming has real benefits when it comes to making quick decisions when faced with lots of incoming data.  Gamers tend to be quicker and more accurate / better decision makers than non-gamers when having to make a snap decision while processing tons of visual information.  The kind of decisions that come up when driving a vehicle for instance.

Last year, I went to an air show in Fort Worth and had a long talk with an F-35 pilot. We talked about the networking of his jet, and I asked him if kids coming into the force today, with all of their computer skills and mental multi-tasking, are better prepared to fly this sort of a jet. He said, “Absolutely.”
