So as I’ve gotten older, I thought I grew out of loud vehicles. Then a couple weeks ago the muffler of the van gave up it’s internals, clogging the exhaust, and forcing me to make a choice.

Given it needs other work and exhaust anyway, I decided to just straight pipe it for the moment until I get things sorted, because a $6 pipe was cheaper for a temporary fix than a $60 muffler.

Surprisingly, it sounds very mean at idle and decent at low revs. It’s a bit rappy above 4k, but in a makes me giggle kind of way. It drones obnoxiously on the highway and when accelerating. The best part is the pops and gurgles when I downshift. Usually some mild pops, followed by some obnoxious backfires, followed by burbling when the revs mellow down.

This new obnoxious tone is addictive and makes me giggle like a little kid everytime it happens. It’s also led to 2 weeks of 12 mpg average as I’ve been driving it like a jackass pretty much daily.

I know it’s wrong, but I just can’t help myself right now, it’s too much fun!!!!

Drifty van for your time:

The line between “great-sounding exhaust” and “broken exhaust” is a grey area, at best.

Also, DAJIBAN!

Every time I drive my Miata, I am reminded that my STi is way too quiet. While sure, this makes driving the Subaru much more comfortable and pedestrian it still just feels like it is missing something. Whenever I hear an obnoxiously modded Subaru drive by with that boxer rumble, I am also reminded of my stock exhaust. But then again, my quiet, wingless subaru flies under the radar MUCH better this way and doesnt draw any of that negative po po attention. So its a dilemma that I am sure to just give in and get a loud exhaust some day but it at least makes me stop and think for a bit.

Its funny to me though because ive definitely read reviews of the stock STi exhaust being “too loud” to people. And “highway drone” due to “high revs”. Like sure its not a frigging Lexus but it sure seems like it to me who is used to no roof and performance exhaust on the Miata.

Replaced the resonator and cat section on my monte carlo with a section of straight pipe when it rusted and fe ll off, the noise was glorious, especially considering that one of the clamps loosened up and a large volume of the gasses were dumping out of the exhaust before entering the mid pipe.

Incredibly obnoxious, but the noise gointg under an over pass or letting it coast down an off ramp was wonderful. Loud and burbly with only an occasional backfire. Sounded great at i dle too. My neighbors may not agree with this assesment.

When I redid the Alfa’s exhaust it got a lot louder. Deleted the rear (smaller) muffler/ resonator and switched to header.  The new sound  is very addictive. Sometimes I’ll scrub speed just so I can accelerate again to hear it.

Why do I suddenly want to do a Durango/Aspen Hybrid swap into a Dajiban, make it a stealth camper van of sorts , and actually mod it in the Dajiban style?

Removed the Reneg ade’s muffler and exhaust. It has the same engine as the Abarth, and sounds pretty darn good; pops and everything. I’m team no muff

Straight piping the hearse almost convinced me to keep it. If not for the hassle the failed inspection sticker would have brought...

I find myself doing the same. Although I downshift to listen to the pops, burbles, bangs before stepping it down and letting it sing.

That is something I sadly cannot accomplish. Anyone want to meet up and take a video to post for everyone? ( of the van in action, weirdos )

I kinda do too, and I want a dajiban plate for it lol. I’m so terrible at making decisions for my next car, I’ve been looking at pretty much everything you can think of from tiny hatchbacks to cargo vans and trucks, SUVs, sports cars, wagons etc.... No idea what I'll end up with it literally changes every couple hours lol, I have no focus at all.

Same here.

I’ve got about a dozen different ideas for a 3rd vehicle when the truck sells.

Currently I’m thinking a Dajiban would be perfect as I could still carry the family and have enough tow rating to tow my daughter’s race car when we get it built.
