I did that once.

Public service announcement- on John Deere 140 lawn tractors the gas tank is next to the battery. Do not rest a metal 5 gallon gas can on the battery while filling the tank. Trust me, the results are memorable.

While that is deeply unfortunate for them, at least encourage them to buy a better replacement. From my hydraulic mechanic days, John Deere equipment was the biggest, and most proprietary, junk we I worked on (at least in terms of hydraulic systems). Any thing Japanese would be a vastly better investment. If them have to buy a ‘merican name, at least try to get them into a Case.
