Because why have a Toyota, or a Pontiac, or a Toyota rebadged into a Pontiac when you can have a Toyota rebadged into a Pontiac then back to a Toyota again? They even kept the front Pontiac badge.

wiki:
The Vibe was exported to the Japanese market (with minor badging changes and right-hand drive configuration) as the Toyota Voltz, and was exclusive to Toyota Japanese dealerships called Toyota Netz Store . Whereas its exterior styling is identical to the Vibe, some interior details differ, matching the interior of the Matrix instead. Curiously, the North American Toyota-branded Matrix was not sold in Japan.

So strange. It has a Pontiac badge on the front and Toyota on the rear.

Was this an attempt to satisfy the whole trade balance agreement that also spawned the Toyota Cavalier?

That’s because the Voltz was only sold in Japan when new.

Not EXACTLY a Pontiac badge up front, rather a similar shaped one that looks like a big, silver V, for Voltz.
