I feel like the only place I’d feel safe behind the wheel of one of these (due to my lack of skill, not the car itself) would be on a big, flat, open tarmac.

Depends on where? In Indiana they let us out once or twice a year on one of the airstrips at Grissom AFB. There was a lot of room, with perfect concrete. I bet it could get up enough speed on the courses they’d set up there. The place we ran the rest of the year? Hell no.
