STRATOVISION! Westinghouse and Martin Aircraft teamed up to turn B-29s into TV broadcasting relay antennas. Flying at 30,000 feet they could broadcast a signal 238 miles.
They figured they could broadcast signal to 78% of the U.S. with 14 aircraft.
Apparently the planes were used to broadcast propaganda during the Vietnam war. They were eventually replaced by EC-121s, which were replaced by EC-130s in subsequent conflicts.

That’d be great for rebroadcasting Major League Baseball with implied oral consent.

Thanks. I stumbled across that myself, and figured it needed a write up. It’s pretty cool.

I love all the weird (but functional) ideas they came up with in the 40's and 50's.

We take technology for granted. These guys invented technology.

What’s old is new again. There is a company looking to provide high speed wireless internet service by using aircraft to provide a wireless mesh network.
