It gets better after the first stage and gets really good by the third and later stages. That said, skip the intro until the fourth stage.

Your bad people.
But yeah the show starts off slow. I’d suggest watching Initial D legends. It’s a new remake of the first season. Animation is 100% better, and he story moves a lot faster.

First stage is horribly dated, but the racing’s good once you make it past.
You are watching the subbed version and NOT the godawful dubs, right? Tokyopop’s dubs just utterly ruined the series.

Oh god....the butt rock and bad hip hop just BUTCHERED the show almost as badly as the half-ass translation and dub job.
