I am currently kicking myself for not having the available funds to purchase this ($4850 could get me a
V12
). Nor will I likely acquire such funds anytime soon. Gahhhhhh

You'll need a lot more than 4850 to run that thing

I could afford maintenance. It wouldn’t be getting a TON of miles under my ownership (even my current actually-reliable daily only receives ~5k a year at the moment). I’m also no stranger to unreliability and scarce/expensive parts thanks to my old Audi 90 Quattro 20V. It doesn’t scare me. I just don’t have the cash up front to buy it right now. Too many other random outgoing costs this year.

Stop it! Post enough of these and I’ll end up buying one, and I do 12k a year with $6.85/gallon fuel.
It’ll ruin me...

Sooner or later you’ll regret it and end up hating all Jaguars afterwards.
Besides, the XK engine is classier.
Particularly if fitted to an XJ or Mk2 (etc) body, of course.

Did Collins have his out while you were here? I can’t remember.

You know you want to!
Just get a 4.0 6-cyl version. It practically sips gas! :P

Hmm... it’s a toss up to me between the classiness of a Jag V12 vs the XK engine. I mean, I agree that the XK is classy. It’s one of my favorites, and I plan to use it in a custom build. But dat V12...

Nope. I heard about it vaguely, but forgot you had a friend with one. Considering he still has it, I take it he hasn’t been driven completely mad by it?

If they hadn’t tripled in price over the last few years I’d already have one...
...and then put Triumph Triple ITBs on it ;)

Not in the traditional sense.

Not completely. A good deal of it is quite maddening, but even more of it is quite pleasant. I have found that I’m one of those people who is actually quite satisfied when I get to work on my car. Surprisingly, though, it hasn’t given me any new problems to work with. Everything that has been an issue was either a previous problem, a factory design oversight, or a result of sitting for so long; I consider it more reliable than my Jeep beater at this point. If you’ve got a mechanic’s brain then go for it!

I purchased my XJ-S back from the guy my parents sold it to not running for $1800, got it running with $10 of coax wire (long story) and have put around $2000 into it since then, so I’m a little under that mark. Completely renewed the cooling system, fuel system, ignition harness, a bent and rusted radius arm, new tires, etc. All age-related stuff. It has (happily) been reliable to drive so far. I absolutely love driving it.
As long as you make sure it stays cold, the 5.3 V12 they put in these is actually pretty solid. It’s all the ancillary equipment that the problems arise from. I just have to recite over and over in my head *Marelli and Lucas are your friends* and it’s all ok.

Also, I want that whole barn. Avanti, classic Cadillac, Maser, Mark IV Continental... Good stuff.

That sounds *exactly* like my Audi. The 5-cyl was fine. It was everything else that kept going wrong. Good to know!

Are they quite a bit pricier over there in Blighty? They’ve gone up a bit here in the past few years, but I don’t think they’ve tripled.

Yeah, it took me a surprising amount of time before I noticed that ‘63 Avanti in the back. If that’s a collection and not just some classics dealer, I like this guy.

That’s pretty awesome, and sounds exactly like what I want. It’s even bothering me less and less that they’re (nearly) all automatics.

Tripled from £1200 is still only £3600, which is still a nice price for a decent daily runner, but it’s put it well out of my price range :S
Can’t find projects for £500 either now :(
