Picked this sucker off craigslist earlier today. It was owned by an older man who drove an XJ40 Jaguar... an early 90s XJ6. He said if you know how to work on cars or have a good mechanic they’re easy to own.
I put it in the Sequoia in the 2nd row so it would not roll around... actually it did not even move at all. It’s not that heavy, only 25 pounds or so.
The specs...
NEC Ready 9616
Socket 5 Intel Pentium 120MHz
16MB RAM (2x8MB, 2 SIMM slots free)
CD-ROM + 3.5" floppy drive
2GB 7200RPM SCSI HD (came with no HD, I had this lying around)
Adaptec 2940UW PCI SCSI
3COM 3C905B PCI Ethernet
Diamond SpeedStar 24X 1MB ISA video card (this one is a bit weird and out of place... it was a upper class 386 card in its hey day)
Integrated audio w/ OPL3 MIDI
56K ISA modem
200W PSU
Gave it a good cleaning. Wasn’t that bad for its age, just some scratches and marks on the sides of the case.
Ribbon cables galore.
This gfx card screams 1993
Bit of a PITA to copy drivers on a machine with no USB and a CD-ROM drive that doesn’t play nice with newer burnable discs.
I want to upgrade the RAM and gfx card at some point. I would probably have to get an ISA ethernet card if I were to bump up the gfx card since the machine only has 2 PCI slots and 4 ISA slots. The only real issue with it is that the machine needs a new CMOS battery... which is not your ordinary one. It uses an RTC like this and is underneath the drivebays (which are not removable so it requires removing the mobo to replace the RTC).

Impressive! Our first family computer was an IBM Aptiva from 1996 - Pentium 200Mhz with 16MB RAM (which we upgraded to 64Mb), a 2Mb ATi 3D Rage video card, Sound Blaster sound card, 2Gb hard drive running Windows 95! :D

Holy cow, that must have been an impressive rig back then! I just had a bog standard Gateway back then, but it didn’t stop me from playing the hell out of Chips Challenge and Ski Free.

Yeah that was quite high end during its time.

Nice, but I have ported versions on my XP machine still. Now if only I could dig up my notebook with the level passwords.
What I really need is a good use for 360 GB worth of old IDE hard drives. That’s some OK home media server size storage, but I only have SATA compatible motherboards at the moment.

If you have a smaller spare 3.5" IDE drive, let me know!
and for passwords

I have like...four 40gbs, an 80gb, a 60gb, and a 320gb IDE drive sitting downstairs.... :(

It was! Came with a special copy of Mechwarrior 2 tailored just for that video card....played the hell out of that game!!! (
I still have the opening cinema scene from Mech2 memorized word for word to this day
...such graphics at the time to a 10-year old kid I still play Mechwarrior Online even today!)
The Aptiva came with MS Flight Sim 95 as well....so much Cessna flying from Meigs field. We also played a crap-ton of XWing vs. TIE Fighter :D

SCSI in that era PC is pretty ballar. And the 2940 was used/supported EVERYWHERE.
I’m assuming 72 pin SIMMs for the memory? Or PC100?
And only two PCI slots is a predicament in that thing. Does it have built-in IDE you could use? Maybe use an IDE to SDCard converter to speed up IO and reclaim your PCI slot for a proper S3 graphcis card?

72 PIN SIMMs, 2 PCI slots since the machine is from late 95/early 96. I could get a CF card to IDE converter and use that. The issue is I don’t want to pay $10+ for a fucking PCI gfx card... that’s insane. Do you happen to have any spares?

If you contacted me 3 years ago I did. I thined out my cache of stuff when I migrated from Indiana to Belgium. Now even if I did have one shipping from here to the USA would be prohibitive.
There are 72 pin SIMMs in 256M flavors, but I have no idea how much RAM that thing can handle.

go get an old copy of Solaris 7 x86 and you’ll be able to do nothing really slowly!

By the looks of it, it has a 430FX chipset, so 72-pin EDO.
