American Airlines retired 20 MD-80s today, as they continue to phase the type out over the next year and a half in favor of 737s and A320 variants.

I can’t say I’m too broken hearted. They were, and still are, an important part of commercial aviation history, but they are loud and smoky, and sitting in the back row of one is torture. I do miss that old livery, though. It photographed so much better than the new one.

I’ve flown on them a few times, but never had the misfortune of sitting towards the back, thankfully.

Im with you, The 80 was not my favorite to fly in, but I do understand that the pilots liked them.

Same for a 1970 Challenger though

As a frequent flyer that has many friends in the Defense industry I can say that I have, more than once, tried to convince them to buy up every single MD-80 ever made, convert them to drones, fill them with explosives, and use them as giant cruise missiles.
Fuck that plane.

I can’t count how many I’ve flown on. They do the job, but that’s about it.

All true. When you fly in one of the newer jets, you really appreciate how much the old gals deserve their retirement.

For what it’s worth, my mom once had a patient who had been a VP at Boeing, and he said he would never fly on any MD plane after the merger under any circumstances.

Sitting in the back of those did suck, although nowhere nearly as bad as a 727.
I remember flying in DC-10s and MD-11s when I was a kid and they had a similar tail-jet layout as the 727, but I was so young I can’t remember if they were ovewhelmingly loud like the 727.

I wonder if DL will buy them. I'm only half kidding.

Do you want a coffee or a coffee beer?

Coffee beer please.

Not for service as whole aircraft.

I know where you can find some Mad Dogs if you need a fix.

Yeah I won’t miss the D-9 family when they are gone. So loud compared to newer aircraft. Though the 5-across seating is definitely nicer than six across in a 737 or A320 (at least on the two seat side). Still, would rather be on an Embraer E-Jet and have four across seating.
The polished aluminum livery could look cool, but American’s always seemed really dingy to me. Don’t think they wash/polish them frequently enough. In any event, the growing use of composites made it inevitable that it would go away.

Just wondering since all three were so well timed

How long until you guys phase them out?

No immediate plans. The MD-90 and 717 will be around for a good while even after the -88s go away.

I swear, everytime I fly (which is always delta) it’s a fucking MD-88

We have a bunch. They don't make it overseas. Try that. ;)

Last time I flew overseas I got screwed by being downgraded from a 777 to a 767 thanks to a delay. Business class too. Wtf delta.
