First day of the finals is over. For those that don’t know, this event has always gotten atrocious coverage and cannot be followed in real time. The USA gets a single TV viewing in December or January. Shaw is going for his 4th title which would tie him for 2nd of all time with Big Z, JPS, and Magnus.
Current standings are:
1.) Shaw @ 25
2.) Janeshia @ 23
3.) Bjornsson @ 22
4.) Hall @ 20- Tied for 1 in DL, Circus Barbell after last place in Frame Carry
Savickas’ absence is good for everybody, regardless of if the log press is in the finals or not.
Remaining events for tomorrow:
Plane pull, Kettlebell throw, Atlas stones.

Are those water tanks used as barbell weights?
![]() 08/19/2016 at 12:09 |

I don’t think so. Just a minimum weight. No sense in having individual 45's on there.

I ask because it looks like I can see a pass through tube, the ends look like ellipsoidal heads, and you can see circumferential weld seams.

Yeah, they could be tanks filled with something but I don’t think it would be water.

If they were, that would be like dead lifting 1000 lb in the picture. When looking up some of the info, it seems some of the WSM competitors do lift that much.

Bro, you really need to look at the mixed grip if you wanna add serious weight to your lifts! /internetbros

I heard somebody talk shit about Eddie Hall’s 1k. Fuck outta here.

As a guy who once got 405# off the ground a few years ago (and never again), I’m blown away at these lifts. Once I shook Bill Kazmaier's hand and realized his forearm was about the size of my thigh.

One GIS later:
Sweet jesus! That is what a torn pec looks like, my god that must suck.

Interestingly enough, all of the elite level guys/girls I’ve ever met say that eating is the worst part. Not the training, which is brutal but fun.

Yeah, cue the Barney the purple dinosaur jokes.

I want to say 700-1000 is usually the range, but nobody usually hits the grand. This year Hall and Shaw tapped out at 445kg, or 979 lbs.

Go ahead and tell those jokes to his face. I dare ya.
I wouldn't do it either, injured or no.

I had to look after reading this.. holy ratballs, he’s not using a split grip!
Heyyyy.. is that Matt Farah? O_o

Hahahaha. To be fair, with full wrist wraps, a standard grip is fine. The bar won't roll easily when it's wrapped up. This pic is so crazy, it looks chopped.

How much is he deadlifting? And what the hell are those things on the bar? USCG navigation buoys?
![]() 08/25/2016 at 14:57 |

A hair over 1,000# I think. WSM often has specialty gear just for their competitions and training. I think they might be water or sand-filled tanks welded just for this purpose. Regular bars can only hold so much...

My pal Bob Moore trained with Kaz on a few occasions many moons ago. (saw the pics, that dude was massive) Bob was the first guy I'd ever seen pull 700 & squat 800. He had a Texas Power Bar back then, not sure what they use today.

It might have been another thread I mentioned it, but I met Kaz once about 15 years ago. Forearms the size of my thighs.

IIRC this would have been around '94 or '95

When I met him was probably '98 or '99, he was retired and doing the commentator thing, plus running a few gyms, etc
