Hello everyone, I have a simple question for the good people of opposite lock. What is the most powerful car that you have ever driven?
For me it was this car.
It is a CL65 AMG with the Stage 2 Renntech.
It was owned by a man named Larry who let me drive it a few months before this photo shoot Webb Bland did. (Also check out Notbland.com, Webb has some awesome photos.) He was a cool dude, and told me to get in the drivers seat, and drive it when I asked him about it. It had so much torque.
So what was the most powerful car you have ever driven?

For me, it was a Challenger Scat Pack!

a Northstar Caddy, 275 hp

Does this fall under, “etc...”??

Driven driven? Or just putting around on the street?
C6 Z06 on the track.

It’s either my dad’s ‘89 Wrangler with a V8, or the RS5 I had a chance to drive a couple years ago. The Wrangler might have more power than the RS5 (450hp), but the RS5 feels like the fastest thing I’ve even had the opportunity to drive.

E63 AMG at a track day.

Power to weight? Yamaha R1, I think.
Power? ~600 hp Cam[e]ro IROC-Z with way too much to list done to it.
![]() 08/02/2016 at 12:59 |

It’s either my dad’s Silverado with a lightly modded 5.3 with somewhere above 300 horsepower, or my aunt’s XT5 with 310 horsepower.
![]() 08/02/2016 at 12:59 |

also a mercedes.
2012 or 13 SL63: 530hp and boy oh boy that exhaust note.
but most exciting high horsepower was a ‘97 550 maranello.
with (a puny today) 480hp. sure felt more exciting then (it was 1997 when i drove it).

For me it was a toss-up for a while, between a bunch of cars that are just tuned versions of normal cars. Or just normal cars, like a Volvo S60 with the T6 engine. I suppose the answer was probably the 1995 Porsche 911 I drove once when I was 16, but it might not actually be the fastest and I certainly didn’t push it very hard with the owner in the car, and also, you know, being 16.
Then I got to drive a Tesla Model S P90D. Bar raised. I don’t imagine it will be beaten for a long, long time.
![]() 08/02/2016 at 13:01 |

I got to drive the Mitsubishi on the left and the two Subarus on the right. Probably one of those. Otherwise it was my old ‘14 WRX

08' Kenne Bell Supercharged Viper.
Took it as a used car inspection R.O. Drove it around. I could remember 3 good times that I almost lost it. The car only had 3,000 miles on it. It was sold cash to a dude for $19,000 before heading to auction. The service adviser told me the original owner said it was putting 850HP to the wheels

500 hp V10 6MT? Yes please, I was also 18 at the time, it’s fun to have rich friends.

Short distances, a bunch of Vettes, Camaro SSes, Challenger R/Ts, CTS-Vs, etc. Working at a dealer sometimes has its perks.
Long distances? Maybe the 3 laps I had in this:
Though it felt slow, and I only mustered a top speed of 140.
I’m sure they’re detuned to hell... I was told 400hp by someone once.

The hovercraft or tank? One at a time, but not combined.

Those RS5 are nice. A V8 Wrangler you say? Chevy V8, Mopar V8, or AMC V8??
![]() 08/02/2016 at 13:11 |

That’s pretty awesome! Nothing wrong with a WRX good sir!
![]() 08/02/2016 at 13:12 |

It is still a racecar though! Feeling slow doesn’t mean it is slow though.
![]() 08/02/2016 at 13:13 |

I’ve got no exciting stories. I don’t know anybody with connections to awesome race cars, or people who have high-powered road cars.
I think the most powerful vehicle I’ve ever driven is my Mom’s Escape with the 2.0L EB engine. My Mazda3 is damn efficient, but with its 2.0L SkyActiv engine, it’s not turning heads or punching you into the back of your seat.
![]() 08/02/2016 at 13:13 |

Those SL63s do sound good at full throttle! The 550 and 575 Maranellos are such good looking cars. I drove a 575 a few years ago, and I loved it.
![]() 08/02/2016 at 13:14 |

It’s a Chevy 350 - aluminum heads and rods, composite intake, etc pretty much full-built.

Porsche Panamera Turbo S. I worked at a Porsche dealer and I was to drop off the customers car and then pick up the loaner. I didn’t do anything reckless, but just putting my foot down to merge, it was clear what it could do.
Insane car. I'm certain over 500hp.
![]() 08/02/2016 at 13:17 |

16 years old and driving a 911. You were lucky! Those S60 with the T6 are pretty quick for what they are. Those Tesla Model S P90D are insane. Instant torque with the electric motor.

Nothing wrong with the Escape, but I think you Mazda 3 has more power, and a better power to weight ratio.
You will have some exciting stories one day!

The SRT 8 Cherokee has more power, but both are bad ass!

I want one of these in blue! I like the black diamond edition Vs though. I have their yellow brakes on my GTO.

Those Panamera Turbo S are not given enough credit for what they can do, but man are they pricey.

It was sweet— a little overly large for my tastes. Got to drive it as part of a test drive during the DC auto show a couple years ago. Kicked it sideways for a killer powerslide and ran to the top of 2nd gear— intense power for how heavy the thing is...

I wish, he was his car at the time, he sold his old 5 series and needed a car, so that’s what he was driving. I’m kinda glad I didn’t have an M car when I was that young, otherwise I’d probably be dead now.

The new Challenger Scat Pack or the Vintage one? Both are cool though!

I’d have happily taken either, at least I got to enjoy myself behind the wheel.
![]() 08/02/2016 at 13:30 |

I love the torque of the tdi. It felt much faster than 190hp tbh.
![]() 08/02/2016 at 13:30 |

From what I can remember, it has a 93 octane tune, full MagnaFlow exhaust, throttle body spacer, K&N cold air intake, and I know there's more but I can't remember what.
![]() 08/02/2016 at 13:31 |

An F Body WS6 trans am, 6 speed naturally. I didn't really get to open it up that much, but it had torque in spades. I've driven my dad's '02 Cooper S to the limit many times.

I don’t drive many cars that aren’t either mine or rentals, so this was a bit tough.
Shockingly, it was a rental car - Ford Mustang V6 Coupe, with 305hp (I believe it also had the best power:weight ratio). The runner-up was a M-B E350 with 302hp (I thought it was the winner at first until I looked up the Mustang).
![]() 08/02/2016 at 13:34 |

My 150HP motor does not have more power than the ~220HP 2.0L turbo engine from Ford.
![]() 08/02/2016 at 13:35 |

That is so awesome! It was a different time back then. I wish I could drive that route in a Lamborghini Espada 400 GT.
![]() 08/02/2016 at 13:36 |

Torque is what moves you down the road.
![]() 08/02/2016 at 13:37 |

That’s freaking awesome!
Let me know if you ever have a SRT8 Magnum or AMG wagon come through! Or a nice low mileage manual GTO.

Those LSA engines are great for moving heavy cars quickly!

I’m probably low on the scale around here. For me it was a ‘79 Camaro with a 427 BBC in it. I have no idea what the actual power number was for it but it could certainly scare the fuck out of me.
![]() 08/02/2016 at 13:43 |

A 2nd Gen F body with a big block is no slouch, and would embarass most of the more powerful cars listed if it could put the power to the ground.

lamborghini gallardo in Vegas. Rented it for 4 hours. Glorious on the highway. Miserable on the strip.

520lbs of torque will move anything! You just can’t pass too many gas stations.

I always liked the WS6 Trans Ams. The LS1s were high factory 12 cars in the quarter. Mini S are fun!
![]() 08/02/2016 at 13:48 |

Probably a 350HP/650TQ...
...Fleetwood Discovery.
![]() 08/02/2016 at 13:50 |

Nothing wrong with it being a rental car. On Miami Beach almost every exotic is a rental.
![]() 08/02/2016 at 13:50 |
|
It hooked up fairly well. The guy my friend bought it from flared the rear quarters and put some pretty wide tires on it (at least they were wide for back then) and it had subframe connectors and slapper bars. It also featured the world’s stiffest clutch pedal. Driving that car was a workout.
![]() 08/02/2016 at 13:51 |
|
Heck yeah! Most of them on Miami Beach are rentals too. I can’t see how you can really enjoy a Lambo in stop and go traffic on Ocean Drive.
![]() 08/02/2016 at 13:52 |
|
650 tq is needed to move that monster around!
![]() 08/02/2016 at 13:53 |

A 2003 or 04 Mustang that put out 550hp. It was a friend’s; he threw a bunch of money and parts at it and got it up that high. I only got to drive it once because he got shitfaced one night and couldn’t drive home. It rode like crap (think James May complaining about the ride quality of an Aston Martin that was developed on Das ‘ring). It cornered about as as well as top fule dragster, massive oversteer at 30mph! But it was fast as shit.

Most Powerful: 2014 BMW X5 with the 3.0 liter turbo I6, 300 HP
Least Powerful: 1994 BMW 318is, 138 HP OR a 2003 Mercury Sable, 205 HP
*I didn’t drive the E36 for very long, so I also included the Sable, which I drove for a few days

BMW has made some nice power with those new turbo 3.0 I6.
The BMW was rear wheel drive, so it was probably more fun than the Sable.

Yep, some form of racing ZZ block with cams and craziness, he used it for bracket racing.
Beautiful black cherry paint job.
The guy may or may not have worked for GM’s performance group 10-20 years ago, if that’s vague enough to keep from doxing him, haha.

424hp LS1 swapped pontiac fiero weighing in at 2800 pounds. went like hell, but god help you when you went over that traction line around a corner. It will snap around on you like a hungry pitbull.
High horsepower? meh.. but it had a 6.6 pounds per horsepower making it nutty fast. It’s where I learned that mid engine means you get on it on the curve to get more stickyness, letting off means you spin. It did not help that the front and rear had adjustable anti sway bars as well as a fully adjustable racing suspension that were set up so that the car was flatter than a top end vette in the corners. so you had almost no warning that it was about to bite you.

This car, when it was good for about 700whp.
Admittedly I didn’t get in it really hard, but it drives like your grandma’s car off boost and once it starts to spool, holy shit... it’s like when Enterprise goes to warp and all the stars become lines. Another of the shop guys took me for a proper ride in it, through several gears, and it’s just insane.
![]() 08/02/2016 at 14:03 |

Black Cherry Iroc-Z must be pretty out in the sun. It is ok to keep it vague, so nobody gets mad.

It most definitely was, as the Sable gave me a new outlook on what body roll is. I do have to give the Sable credit: it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.
My favorite out of those three is the X5 though, maybe because it’s my most driven car, and that Inline-6 is awesome.

It was a 2000 Buick Regal. Originally a bench seat car with the N/A 3.8L, converted to buckets and turbocharged by a friend of mine. He used to terrorize local drag strips with it and often brought me along to do some of the driving. It had somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 WHP with an open tap and ran low 11's on drag radials at it’s lower boost setting (not full power).
Not bad for a FWD grandma car, and there has never been a car I’ve met more suited to the term “rocket sled.” You just floored it and held on for dear life.
