So, apparently I own a Subaru Outback from the July 2016 - Zone A recall. The long and short of that is, your passenger is about as safe as they would be if they rode with a Bouncing Betty in their lap, so don’t let anyone ride in your front passenger seat. I see that as a major problem, because we bought my wife a station wagon for the utility of hauling large quantities of people and dogs around. How on earth is that an appropriate workaround to the problem, especially considering that they could offer no timeline for resolution? If my wife didn’t need the utility of a 5 passenger wagon, we would still own my (much more fun) NA Miata. I know I can unplug the fuse for the airbag and pretend I’m a bomb disabling badass, but I really want people riding in our car to be safe. If I put pressure on Subaru, do they need to provide me with a rental in the interim?

Yes, if you feel unsafe driving your vehicle there is a waiver to sign and they may put you in a rental. they did for the WQR-53 recall.

(Subaru dealer here)

Thanks for the input. I actually just got off of phone with my local dealer, and basically their story was “just be glad you don’t have to wait until 2017", which aggravated me to no end. They also (contrary to the letter that I received from Subaru), are reserving spots in line for the recall. I was told, in no uncertain terms, that they would NOT be covering a rental in the meantime.

I then tried to call Subaru Corporate, and the department that deals with recalls sends me off to a voicemail box that is so full that you can no longer leave a message.

Where is your dealership? I might need to make the trip from VT...

Ha ha, yeah these recalls are a mess. I read the letters and it looks like they may not be covering rentals for these recalls. Might be due to how many vehicles there are out there, but I am no certain. We are in CA. The problem here is we are the only Subaru dealer within 150 miles, so we get all of our local Subarus.
