It’s on a 1997 Acura EL (1997 Honda Civic Sedan)

I dont think it’s that because my friend just installed a custom control arm when he saw that thing he outlined.

Trailing arm, because it is a control arm that trails behind the point it pivots on.

The part circled is the trailing arm. The lower control arm would be #4 in this diagram. It connects the hub, to the center of the cars chassis in this case.

I wouldn’t say its just inexpensive cars, the 3 series had trailing arms on the rear suspension until the F30 generation.
