Or, What Would Freddy “Tavarish” Hernandez do?

The boss (that I like) just bought himself a new truck - a Ram 1500 Express Crew Cab with the “Black Ram” package.

(a band discussing his truck)

His old truck, a 2000 F150 XLT 2wd with stepside, extended cab, 4.6/5speed, is likely going up for sale.

It’s got just shy of 200,000 miles, has a lingering CEL from evap system, a driver rear door that’s stuck shut (which I hear is a common issue on these trucks),surface rust on the roof, and seriously oxidized headlamp lenses. It also has aftermarket leather and a sunroof from our company.

The Old Truck In Question

He says he’ll need to keep it because his daughter just turned 15 and he will likely be driving it again once she gets her license, but I doubt that. He also isn’t hurting for any money so he doesn’t *need* to sell it. But I do need a beater truck for doing truck stuff. I’ve also been partial to Ford and Toyota trucks for a long time.

Now, as some of you may have read, I live on the homestead with my sister- and mother-in-law living in other houses on the property. My mother-in-law’s husband has an early 90s Mazda B2300 (facelifted Ranger). It’s one of seven vehicles they own for two drivers. My sister-in-law has a 2004 or so (angry-face) Silverado that sits in her yard. She’s got that truck, and her Acura TL, and a Kawasaki Ninja 600.

However, asking either of them to borrow the truck for an hour for a dump run is like asking for a kidney. Every time we’ve used the vehicles in the past, we’ve returned them in better condition than we found them. Nevermind that both my wife and I are expected to drop everything for either of them, and we’re always helping them out, and I can guarantee neither of them has ever read Lehto’s Law.

So, instead of worrying about bothering with my family and their drama for the times I may need a truck- how should I approach him about buying it? I have a little cash and this could make things a bit easier at home. For the truck as it is, in its current condition, most on Craigslist are asking $3-4000.

NADA has this:

Values

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!

Dealer Trade-in: $876

Private Party: $1,388

Dealer Retail: $2,251

How would you approach it?

Going to go the other direction here.

3-4 is decent scratch... High miles, patina, stuck door, CEL... I think if you’re not going to use a truck often, get a Ranger or S10 in superior condition for the same price. I’ve made ample use of my little Toyota (garbage, gravel, bark, sand, wood, you name it).

I was going to see about starting at a grand or so but I don’t want to insult him. I’m also 6'3" and about 300 lbs so a single-cab compact truck is torture for me. Even a single-cab F150 feels kind of small.

A grand would be a NP as long as you can get it registered.
