The first mistake made here was on the truck driver’s part. He shouldn’t have begun the turn without being able to fully clear it. It’s not the oncoming traffic’s responsibility to make sure that this guy’s dick move was successful.

But you’re right: If oncoming traffic forfeited their right-of-way, the jam would have cleared up sooner. It would have worked; it’s just not a reasonable expectation.

Always the slippery slope of courtesy — give people too much leeway, they act like dicks more frequently. But in this case, the common good and safety should trump this guy's dumb move...at least much more quickly than 6 minutes.

I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt — probably an inexperience short-haul driver. Maybe it looked clear, then he was jammed in by speeders. Had the jam cleared in under 6 minutes, I'd be a little more critical, but at some point people have to just suck it up for common safety.

I agree with you there. Drivers here are really quite inconsiderate. It’s a bitch of a crossing, I get it. But it was just annoying for me because I had to get to work and its a lame excuse for being late.

Going right leads to a dead end. You could squeeze by him, but it involves hopping a curb which my lowered C30 doesn’t appreciate

Yeah, reminds me of some of the small industrial towns I'll occasionally drive through where a stopped train might mean 2+ hours of traffic diversions. And I wasn't excusing the guy, it was stupid to take a chance like that, but some traffic situations are cases where everyone working together = win.

I’ve been on many highways in this great nation. And betting on courtesy all the time is a bad bet. Even if they try (obviously most truck drivers do) sometimes mistakes happen. Being in the smaller, more nimble vehicle I’ve felt that it’s always my responsibility to avoid depending on their courtesy.

Then, on the other hand, some people enjoy using cruise control in a semi’s blind spot.

In all honesty the one thing I was shocked by was the fact that no one on our side honked at the guy.

Some got impatient and hopped a curb to get around him,but no one blared a horn or anything.

It’s tough spot to judge speed in though because it goes from a 40 to a 55 zone there so traffic probably looked a lot slower than it actually was.

Given where I live, I rent a car 3 or 4 times a year - usually to drive down to DC/MD. There’s a part of the Jersey Turnpike that splits and one side allows no heavy trucks - I always take that side. I don’t pass a big truck on the right, and I let them by if they’re acting like assholes or driving erratically.

I lived in FL about half my life and can vouch that it’s tough to judge speeds on big, flat, open roads. No frame of reference to judge the speed. I remember reading about how many random accidents occur on big roads for that exact reason, especially with recent transplants from the Northeast (so basically...everyone!). Roads and distances are so short up North, that living in FL takes some getting used to. Some guy is 1/2 mile away, but might be doing 90mph on a State Highway and you pull right out in front of him.

Unfortunately, oncoming traffic contains a variety of drivers. As each one approaches, they see a truck waiting patiently to make a turn. No single oncoming driver is responsible for making the truck wait six minutes. For each one of them it’s just a brief encounter, and a simple matter of passing through promptly so that the trucker can fall in behind once it’s clear.

I don’t think any of them had any idea how long the truck had been there, or could even see how much traffic was being held up. I might be willing to forfeit my right-of-way briefly to help clear a major jam, but if all I see is a guy properly yielding to me, I’m not going to do anything out of the ordinary.

To be honest they have to drive aggressive. They’re big, they’re slow. The way people drive now, sometimes they have to force the issue. If they were courteous, and waited for an opening, they could spend more than half their time stopped.
