So my upstairs neighbors are dumb shits. For referance I live in a large house turned triplex one mainfloor apt. One upstairs and one in the back that is on both levels. Any way he’s an alcoholic, she’s emotionally unstable and refuses to get a job, probably hasn’t saught out professional help either. At least 4 times a week they fight, him yelling, her screaming, and crying, one or both of them throwing stuff. It sounds like he pushes her around. Anyway we’ve called the cops on them, cops don’t do shit. Cops knock on the door, and when they stop making noise and don’t come to the door, the cops leave. You know cuz there’s no way there is an abusive, or dangerous situation going on the other side of that door. Several times I’ve resorted to banging on their door, and yelling at them to grow up and shut up. Well this morning they woke me up at 4 am. At 4:15 I went up bang on the door, and said “one or both of you needs to leave because I need to sleep.” Well one of them did leave, thank god. But not 5 minutes later they come back and tear into each other again. So I went up bang on the door, they keep yelling, I try to open the door it’s locked, at this point I’ve been up listening to their shit for 45 minutes and I’m so done. I kicked the door, and a section of it broke out. My foot through the door must have startled them lol. The guy says “ well now you’ve done it.” The girl is on the floor crying. They both spend 10 minutes telling me how it’s not their fault. I told, I don’t give to shits who’s fault it is, that this kind of stuff is never one sided, and “asked” them to grow up, and move on, and in the mean time let me go back to sleep.

I’ll have to deal with the door some time today I guess. Our landlord is my father in law and I know he wont be mad, but I’m not the kind of person to not try to fix my mistakes. And yeah I shouldn’t have kick the door in, that was silly, worst part is I’m still so damn worked up that there is no way in hell Im gonna get any sleep before 7 when I’m supposed to get up. And my wife is out of town so I didn’t have any one to vent to so that’s why this rant happend.

Yeah, don’t get shot. I’d suggest just getting a highly caffinated beverage of your choce and going on a drive yourself since you have to get up at 7 anyways.

I've used it do deal with the screaming at 4am, emotionally unstable people in my life (kids)

Have your FIL threaten them with eviction, if they keep disturbing the neighbors. Or cause a ruckus everyday at noon when they are probably sleeping. Force them onto your sleep schedule. If you’re at work you can still accomplish scheduled noise using a computer and a good sound system.

He's a big softie. He was about to evict them because they were like 6 month late on rent but the. They paid like 4 months worth in one day.

Yeah, the guy, who spits the one paying rent said he's working on moving out so hopefully it won't come to that. Lawfully evicting some one is a surprisingly difficult thing to do.

I have this poster on the back of my bedroom door, he watches over me as I sleep. I also scared the shit out of a few people who didn’t expect to see it when they closed my door.

Surprised the police didn't do anything. Around here any domestic call is required by policy to have someone arrested and taken in (even if no charges come of it) because there were a spate of events where the police showed up, were told by both parties that everything was good then shortly after the police left one of them ended up a corpse.

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah because an abuse person is going to have a hard time telling the officers that there is a problem. They most likely will be too scared to, or are in a position where the feel they need the other person even though they are being abused.

Kinja'd!!! jariten1781 > HFV has no HFV. But somehow has 2 motorcycles

Yup, that’s the logic behind it and the policy was pushed by victim’s advocacy groups. Now, however, the same groups are pushing to have it removed because it turns out there are a ton of calls where the lady leaves evidenced injuries (scratches apparently) so they end up being the one taken in. What they suspect is that the guy is pushing around and the woman fights back by clawing and scratching, but because pushing leaves no marks the woman is the one punished (who knows if this is true or not, like most things it's probably a mix). They think it has become a chilling effect and now women are less likely to call in domestics at all under fear of arrest.

It's a tough problem.

This is easy for me to say because I have no idea how to deal with these situations but if you can find the time and compassion maybe befriend the neighbors and try to help them.

When you go to do something about the door maybe bring some beers as an additional apology, and a symbolic gesture of wanting to make things right. Maybe if it’s not the middle of the night you all can have a constructive conversation where you express your needs and they can express their feelings. If the guy is reclusive you can try covertly appealing to the woman (at the risk of the guy getting jealous, he sounds like the type) and seeing if she needs any help, and that if she doesn’t need it now (won’t admit that she needs it) tell her that if she ever does she knows where you live.

I don’t know, this is what my RA training leads me to believe would be the best course of action. It sounds like the people upstairs might need some help and it looks like you’re in a good place to provide it. Also bear in mind I have no idea what I’m talking about. I haven’t been in that many adult situations like this, only college level situations (which can be more severe than this, but often times are petty).

Yeah I went and told my father in law what happend, he laughed and said he probably would have punched the guy. Though I don't think it's all the guys fault. The funny thing was my FIL was only two blocks away at his carpet store cuz he couldn't sleep.

Yeah the thing is it can be really hard to tell sometimes who is the one being abused. And sometimes a unhappy spouse will abuse the system and make it look like they are the victim. When I told my wife what happend she asked why I didn’t call the cops and I reminded her of the time they came and didn’t do anything. I mean the officers knew we called them there because we heard what sounded like an abusive situation, and although they got quite as soon as the cops pulled up, the cops still knew that the couple was in the apt. For all we know on the other side of that locked door he was holding her and saying “if you scream I’ll kill you” or something go that effect. That is why I think those cops didn't do there job and why this time I took matters into my own hands.

Oh I’m sure they need help. But I’m not sure that I’m qualified to give it. I honestly believe the best thing for the both of them would be to stop living together, and seek help with they’re personal problems. The guy’s alcholism and the woman’s depression and I’m guessing dependency, and maybe some crippling anxiety. She sounds a lot like my sister, she thinks she is incapable of taking care of herself and therefro keeps failing to do so, whether it's getting fired, or quitting jobs, or getting involved with guys that are no good, or spending money on drugs rather than her rent. She'll fine any excuse to ruin her life and try to convince others that she NEEDS their help.

Yeah. Recently not that far from where my FIL lives a couple were having a dispute, the wife had been cheating, they were seen fighting about it in a bar the night before. Anyway their 13 yr old daughter called the cops. Cops came the husband told them they didn’t need to be there. And hour later the husband killed his wife and shot himself. The daughter had to call 911 when she found her mother dead and her father shot in the chest. He had missed his heart. He did dude the next day. Image the effect that has had on is little girl.
