So I have the opportunity to purchase an LR3.

Kinja'd!!!

Not the one pictured, Just a factory fresh LR3 with 116k on the clock, a busted parking brake, and a leaky coolant hose.

It’s relatively dirty but in overall decent condition. Air suspension works.

It can be had for <$5,000...

Tell me all the reasons I shouldn’t.

Doug DeMuro has a Range Rover. You’ve seen his stuff, yeah? If you’re willing to pay those kinds of bills out of pocket, go for it.

Uh my friend literally got rid of his yesterday because it had about 10k in repairs coming, tranny failed.... It’s the only one I have knowledge of, and it is a hated vehicle.

If I had a garage for wrenching and didn’t need the car to be reliable, for 3-4k, I’d buy one as a project, especially if it is lifted and you’re willing/able to work on it yourself.

Nah, if you are going to get one don’t get an LR3. You need an LR4 (or a Series I or II Discovery). So much cooler looking.

Do you know the first name of your mechanic?

No? Oh, then you will.

if your going to get a LR, get a series. They are way more fun, as a second or third (fifth in our case) car because reliability really isn’t an issue when you have extra cars.

Well after helping your local Ferrari mechanic pay off his house you gotta pass the torch to the next schmuck generous donor.

Avoid ‘05, first year so they have quite a few mite issues than any other. ‘06 is better but still not my first choice. ‘07 and newer are generally petty good. The engines are generally excellent, provided you take care of that hose and the occasional thermostat leak, assuming you’re not looking at a V6 because those are just flat out stupid. Front lower control arm bushings suck. Air suspension compressors fail frequently on their own and frequently from people jacking on them when trying to lift the vehicle because they look like they could be part of the frame. Transmission electrical connectors will leak on these, it’s not my favorite thing to fix. Tailgate latches/locks fail and require holes to be cut in the interior panel (most dealers stock, or used to stock these) for access to open it manually. It’s been a few years since I’ve been around these so I could be missing some things, but I’m pretty sure that covers most of what you should worry about. Either way, unless it’s a complete turd, that price sounds fantastic.

I've always been told LR3 is one of the more reliable LR's in the stable. I say go for it.

This is all excellent advice, and I’ll echo the following:

The V6 had no reason existing when the V8 was still available, but I’m not aware of any actual problems with it.

Air suspension pump is a maintenance item, people say every 70-80k miles even if it’s still working. But when it works, what a beautiful ride!

You can get a very nice coils spring lift and computer update kit like this if you have trouble: http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/L319SRK-…

Check if it’s got the HD package with the factory locker - this is a big plus. A dealer might be able to tell you w/the VIN, but the only sure way is to crawl under the truck. Otherwise, ARB has the RD217 and RD218 front/rear lockers if you have money to burn.

Like AMGTech says - at $5k or less and if it’s not a total turd, it’s a good deal. If it’s a V6, it might still be worth looking at.

Also excellent advice. I completely agree.

V8 or V6? What year? Does it have the HD package with the locker? Under $5k isn’t bad. I would just assume you will need to replace the compressor, bushings, and bearings, which might be a grand or two if you don’t do the work yourself.

I had a 2006 V6 SE, which I loved. It was the most comfortable vehicle I have ever owned. Pretty capable too. Had some pricey repairs that ended up scaring me into selling it, but I had it for 4 years or so. I've honestly been looking at them again since the prices have dropped so much and the aftermarket is taking off.

I had the V6. It was the same Cologne 4.0l V6 used in the Explorers and relatively bulletproof. It only had 216hp, but it had 250 ftlbs. While it certainly wasn't fast, it honestly had enough power for everything I used it for. Towing might be a different matter though. That being said, the V8 is still more desirable.

Good to know. Like I said, I’ve never heard that the V6 was bad , I just don’t know why they bothered. It was only rated for maybe 1-2 MPG extra over the V8, and it was down a bit on power.

Maybe it was simply a way to keep the vehicle cost down?

I believe it was a cost decision. You're right about MPG, it wasn't hardly any better than the V8. Although it was only 0.4l smaller.
