I live near a neighborhood that sees lots of teardowns to build new multi-million dollar places, and while I obviously can’t do detailed inspections, just looking at it, the construction just feels immensely cheap. Seems like a lot of these places are being built with the expectation that they’ll only last twenty years or so.

twenty years is generous really. Those big McMansions are generally build very cheaply due to people wanting the most house for the money. as a result they also tend to be shit boxes, big fancy looking shit boxes. friend grew up in one and the amount of repairs their parents did to it as a result of this is almost hilarious. walls buckling and cracking, leaky roof, sinking foundation that needed to be jacked up in one corner, list goes on and on. it was a joke of a house, the whole neighborhood was a joke. But hey when you just want the biggest house you can get for the best price what did you expect?

You aren’t kidding. My house was built in 99, and it’s not very well crafted in my opinion. The upstairs bathrooms will leak if there’s any water spilled on the floor at all. I also have a leak from an upstairs window that is right above my front door. And I won’t even mention the cheap-ass builder’s grade windows I have. I can watch my curtains blow in the wind with the windows closed. If there’s any comfort I can take in this is that I've managed to fix a lot of this crap over time, and I have one of the smallest houses in the neighborhood, so at least my money isn't sunk into a property that will never see a ROI.
