Man, I saw one of these for sale outside a local McDonald's, I am stunned that there are any of them left.

Well, they’re very nearly a Jeep Cherokee under the skin, IIRC. Not much mechanical dastardness of a unique and impossible to replace nature.

Other way around. They’re both entirely AMC under the skin, and the best of AMC was Jeep.

I was phrasing in that way in terms of the donors one would consume to keep one running. Speaking of AMC, I found out the other day that a Cherokee with electronic ignition for at least several years uses the same module that was in the Renault Alliance. Derp. Not sure which was the origin.

The Renault Appliance? I remember that ....

I’ve worked on one. Friend has one as his first car - still running like a champ.

It’s amazing what good maintenance can preserve.

Low miles, kept out of the salt, and relatively manic first owner or two. The electrical connections under the hood have almost all been popped apart, silicone-greased, and put back together - I shit you not. It’s had some rough turns since then - poor ignition switch replacement, worn out window winder, and a smacked headlight bezel, but it’s basically holding up.
