I tried to save money by buying a cheap, generic cabin air filter for my Mazda5 via Amazon. Never again. If I don’t run the A/C the ventilation system smells like cat piss, which either means A/C or open windows if I want some air - using just the fan must be avoided. There are just some places where saving money is just not worth it.

I use a carbon-activated filter. Not bad. I also got it from Amazon.

I have a “branded” carbon activated one and still experience the piss smell for a few minutes after turning (only) the blower — after using the A/C. I figure it’s bacteria or something being “reactivated” by the moisture in the ventilation system; and figure it goes away when the moisture “dries.” What’s weird is that the smell promptly disappears when I turn the A/C on. So, going with a pricier one may not really help.

It’s because an AC removes most of the humidity in the air. Humidity=better sense of smell as brought to light by TheHondaBros shower fart post from the other day.
