This is me trying to determine which automotive primer/clearcoat to buy for the upcoming respray:

I just finished up the last of the body work on the Fiat last night so it’s time to shop for paint. I’m doing a respray of the factory color, whcih I’ve already ordered. I know I need to get a 2K urethane primer at the least, but I haven’t heard of a single one of these companies making ‘em. Any recommendations?

The short list seems to be Eastwood, Evercoat, Kirker, US Chemical, Mar-hyde, U-pol, speedocoat...

because you don’t get 2k primers in spray bombs (unless you have a local supplier that will load a bomb for you that has a system that breaks and allows the hardener and primer to mix) and that would get pricey.

Get a self etching acid primer (or wash primer) in a can for the bare metal. If the metal has been bare for more than a day re prep it and spray it right away. Then invest in a cheap gun and get any notable brands 2k primer. Go to your local NAPA and get some of their Martin Senour (Sherwin Williams) stuff. Cost should be reasonable compared with other notable brands and I’ve had good luck with the Sherm stuff.

I’ve used NAPA, UPOL, Mar-Hyde and other brands available at paint supply stores with good luck in etch primers.

Related: I’ve only painted a few car parts, but the clear coat always comes out cloudy. Also, I have no compressor, so I’m limited to rattlecans. Like an animal. But the paint always comes out pretty nice. It’s just the clearcoat that messes it up. Is it my technique? Product? Halp?

Not sure on the cloudy clearcoat— might be the brand coming into play? I don’t recall having that issue on my motorcycle when I spray canned it... at least not until it had some time to weather.

I ended up buying an automotive spray gun setup when I was at harbor freight a week ago for about $50. I’m planning on just renting the compressor from home depot— should run about $40-50/day for the rental. I’m planning on priming one weekend, then painting another weekend. My ‘cuz works in stage design and is a wiz using a spray gun so I’m gonna cross my fingers and leave it in her hands!

Awesome, thanks for the advice. I’ve been doing exactly what you recommended with a self-etching spray-can primer on any bare metal, and will stop by a local NAPA to check out the selection. Already got my spray-gun setup; planning on renting a compressor from home depot to do the priming and painting...

be sure you get a compressor that can handle the CFM rating your spray gun needs. It has to be able to produce that rating at a steady rate as you need constant steady pressure for uniform results.

spraying construction and stage type material like latex etc. is an extremely different ball of wax than automotive finishes. Have you considered taking your prepped car to Macco? They have plenty of options from stupid cheap to however high you want to spend. Material cost can exceed how much you need and it’s expensive enough you don’t want to do it twice. Say what you want about Macco, but those guys just paint all day and a pretty proficient at it. They also have the facilities to turn out a clean job.

my guess is while you’re spraying clear your not spraying even patterns while spraying to close and too slow. General rule of thumb is spray it how you want it to look, spray cans don’t offer much flow as it dries quickly. Medium wet coats, medium overlap.

Surprisingly, she’s worked with all the different styles of paint for her stage work. They used 2 part Dupont auto primer for some sculptures for instance. Lotta metalwork. Plus— if she fails miserably I’ll know after we primer it— if that turns out poorly it’ll be MAACO time! Haven’t seen one of those $300-500 specials from them in a long time though... would have to look into what the going rate is these days.

Yah, it’s a 12 CFM big gun (9CFM small) setup, so I’ll need to get a hefty compressor!

Something like this would be bare minimum:

http://www6.homedepot.com/tool-truck-ren…

That puts the budget for the project at:

$70 - gallon 2 part primer

$70 - gallon clear coat

$170 - gallon Factory blue paint

$50 - spray gun setup

$110 - 2 days equipment rental for compressor

Almost $500—hmm, maybe I should have gone with MAACO, but I’ve already got the spray gun setup and factory paint, so I’m only $250 from project completion. May as well finish the race at this point...
