I only play one movement in the third act and I didn’t bring anything to read. The clarinet player bailed me out.

That’s fantastic! I always wondered about what went on behind the scenes.

Wow, seems hardly worth the effort, but a gig’s a gig.
I never brought anything to read. I would get too wrapped up in it and miss my cue or something.

A gig is a gig, and I’m getting paid the same amount as the second trumpet player next to me who is playing his ass off. I do, however, have a big solo in the middle of the second act. Why Glazunov wrote the solo in the third part is anybody’s guess.
I don’t usually read. It’s too hard to concentrate. I usually do crossword puzzles on my phone when I’m not playing, but we’re not allowed to read or use electronics in the pit during a performance. This was an open dress rehearsal tonight. Show opens tomorrow.

He wrote it to keep the third trumpeter awake?
Good luck at the opening tonight!

In the second trumpet part, somebody penciled a cue, “Wake up 3rd tpt.”
Thanks!
