I put a hitch on my Miata because I wanted to take my bikes with me with simultaneous trunk access.
I got the Hard Dog Hidden Hitch which, when you remove the L-bracket making the vertical hitch into a horizontal hitch, is invisible. It’s perfect. I highly recommend it.
Camping weekend success - I managed to take two bikes, tent, sleeping bag, food, chairs, etc all in the trunk of the Miata (or on the hitch).
I am a happy camper.

Thanks for posting. I don’t expect you to be able to address what I’m wondering, which is whether I could use that set up to carry a wheelchair.

I think you can make it work! The tongue capacity is 200lbs. So as long as your chair and platform are under 200lbs, you should be good to go! :)

Maybe not the exact same setup, but I do know wheelchair carriers that mount on trailer hitches exist.

Cool. Can you stow all the hardware collapsed in your trunk when not in use, or do you have to leave pieces home in your garage when not carrying bikes?

Was there a specific reason you went with the vertical hitch?

You may be a happy camper, but I’d absolutely love to see a Miata tow a camper. Or at least attempt.

They do. What I’ve been trying to figure out is what setup will work best on a Miata, but can be stowed when not carrying a chair. Fortunately, there are many options. One of them is bound to suit my purpose.

I have to leave it at home. The bike rack I got isn’t super collapsible (only the vertical post collapses down - it’s too wide to fit in the trunk).

My towing capacity is 1,000lbs. I have seen small campers that are under this and, mark my words, I plan on eventually doing it. :)

I wanted to be able to remove it and not be able to see it.

There are many good looking little teardrop trailers under 1000 pounds.

Any personal recommendations?

My Mini has a max capacity of 1,000 lbs. This is an old picture, but I do this all the time....

Gotcha. Where did you source it? I need to add a hitch to my FR-S, but I haven’t seen anything near that small available.

You could always go with one of those teardrop style campers. Especially the smaller ones. Maybe not exactly what you had in mind, but those are definitely doable.

Now you just need a luggage rack to add additional storage space! Im sure they make one for the NC as well. And I would imagine your tow hitch setup would work well enough on the NA/NB. I definitely want to look into that some day.

I got it here , but they sell them all over the internet.

Okay, thanks. That’s useful.

I looked into a luggage rack (I need a place to put firewood), but I couldn’t find a rack that is removable and works with the PRHT cover operation.

Ok, thanks. I haven’t found anything to fit a Toyobaru the way I want. I may have to go with a
twin hitch
, which I’m not really loving.

Nope. But some of them look wonderful.

I’ve always wanted to pull a trailer with a small car.

Hmm, had not thought about the PRHT! I do wonder if anyone makes one that is compatible with that. Also, since you do have a hard top I wonder if a roof rack would be a decent idea. Obviously would hinder top operation but that would be viable in the winter.

Yes - I’m exploring that, too. I’d like to carry kayaks over the Miata. :)

You are the right kind of crazy.
I thought I was crazy for taking my Miata skiing. I feel like you would not even question that idea haha. Right on!
