Maybe clean out your fans and take a look at the GPU and CPU coolers if you have extra ones.

This gets more and more mysterious to me because the noise goes away after 10 minutes and then comes back sometime later.

I don’t even have a desktop so I have no clue. Just cleaning coolers is all I can guess for now. Unless your hard drive is going out.

That sound there would be a dying hard drive. Make a backup now before it goes completely.

seriously? My hard drive hasn’t really been slow lately. But it is nearly 3 years old.

Sounds like the fan is going bad. Mine was making the same noise. Basically the fan wouldn’t spin in a well ballanced manner and it would more of bounce around as opposed to spin.

Sounds like fan bearings. Open up the case, unplug one fan at a time until it stops and then replace it for $5.
