Why are they called bastard files?

Theory No 1 that I’ve read: that it’s neither a fine nor a mill file and, hence, a bastard.

Theory No 2 that I’ve read: that the file was invented by an Englishman named Barsted and Barsted’s name got, literally, bastardized.

Given that another title is mill bastard and the hand-and-a-half sword is a bastard sword , I’m leaning possibility #1.
