It’s not like I’m some poor person who pulled them out of a junkyard! They’re 50%-condition Dunlop Z2 Star-Specs that came from a fellow Miata autocrosser who’s upgraded to RE-71Rs. It’s absurdly hard to find a shop that isn’t chained by legal reasons that’ll mount them. I know the condition of the tires, hell, I even borrowed them for an autocross and set some fast times on them!
The exact same set of Dunlop Z2*s on borrowed wheels for an autocross.
This isn’t rocket science, people, just mount the fucking tires and stop telling me they’re unsafe. Especially you, Firestone, you fucking hypocrites, you’ll do stretched tires and stance-camber alignments for all the Hondas but you won’t mount used tires?

Or even simpler, have a damned release that a person with used tires signs and do the damned work

There are a few used tire places around, they’d probably mount them.

Man, I know most of my Oppo posts are rants so I apologize for the negativity.

It’s cool. We all have those mornings. At least it’s the weekend?

I have a really good local tire shop that will do things like mount trash tires on wheels for me so I can roll a project around. If that sounds like taunting, it probably is.

Find a tire shop that employs autocrosser(s). Problem solved.

Tell them you’re changing over from “winter” to summer tires. It's literally the same thing.

It’s weird that they would give you grief. Millions of people have ‘used’ tires mounted twice a year, every time they switch from summer->winter or winter->summer.
Are you sure they’re 50%, and not really bald?

What area are you located? If you can find any kind of small performance oriented place and explain to them what they are for then there shouldn’t be any issues. If they give you a weird look, tell them it's only for specific events and you won't use them on public roads and of course you'll sign that waiver releasing them of any and all liability. :)

What about people with winter tires (if that’s a thing in your area)? Will they refuse to swap in/out seasonal tires too? Sounds crazy to me...

Except he’s in SC, where they would just ask, “What’s that?”

Go to a tire shop with the sign in Spanish. They will do it as long as you point at the wheels and tires and say mount, normally $20.

Ask around at autocross. They’ll know who to go to. I’ve got a guy.

They’ve got more tread than my current Nitto NeoGens and they’re 2 years newer. I say they’re more than fine to run until the end of Fall.

If you were anywhere close to Cape Cod I could get that done where I work no problem

reminds me that i need to get on buying some old tire irons for installing tires, so i can stop patronizing the shops where im at.i get turned away from half of them, even though i tell them that they are just rolleys to hold up a car off the ground in the yard. i got aggravated with the wont repair antics that they would throw, RIGHT AFTER they take the tire off the wheel.
pulled out the long screwdrivers , and the hammer, the wd, and remounted it myself. then plugged it in the lot. all i had wanted was a legit patchup. pretty well gave up on the tireshops after that.

I went through this with firestone myself. My grand Cherokee had one tire failing because of a nail in the tread very near the sidewall. Because of its 4wd system (as with any, really) it is ill advised to purchase only one new tire, or even two, at a time because a difference in height of more than something like 1/16" can cause undue wear on the differentials. I bought the current set of tires from firestone, they were destination LE’s, and somehow managed to find one single LE with the exact same tread remaining on eBay for a pittance. Took it back to these guys and asked to have the one tire put on and it was basically like Consuela from Family Guy...nooo nooooo noooo no. Went to a rougher part of town and found an auto shop where a kid maybe 19 swapped it over for $20.
