A friend of mine made this claim last night, and I’d like to know if anyone else has heard of something similar. He says that a buddy of his, who wanted a
pre-owned
car,
out of the dealership’s network
, was able to have a local dealership act on his behalf in procuring the car that he wanted.
I don’t know the details. Did the dealership buy the car from the other dealership and then sell it to the guy? Or did the “middle man” dealership just charge the guy a fee?
I’m interested because I’ve found the exact car I want, but it’s pre-owned and in the hands of a nightmare of a dealership, located a few hundred miles away (more on that later, probably).
Anyone heard of anything like this?

I haven’t meet a dealer yet that wouldn’t find a car for you to buy if you were so inclined to buy from them. So yes, dealers will do this sort of thing, unless they just want to sell you a new car... but most dealers will work to find you the car you want if you are going to pay them to do so, shit it’s what they do!

I’ve not heard of this specifically, but I have said it a million times. A dealer will do anything to sell you a car.

They could. I know a guy who runs his small dealership and currently likes to flip pre leased Leafs....Leaves.....? And he told me he could look for anything I wanted since he goes to get stuff all the time.

Dealer trades. Happen all the time. Sometimes they do a straight up trade, or have a small fee. Just depends.

And I can suggest to my local dealer that they do a dealer trade, without sounding like an idiot?

Some dealers, usually used-only dealers, will auction buy for you for a fee, typically 3-500. This is getting harder to find because most car buyers don’t always understand that this sort of deal means no recon. If you then pay the dealer to mechanically inspect/fix the car and detail it, you just saved no money...maybe 50-100 bucks by virtue of not tying up any of the dealer’s floorplan.

Yeah, just tell them you would like to do buisness with them, however they currently do not have a vehicle in stock to your liking. Let them know you have found a vehicle at another dealer and see if they’re up for getting it. You may have to pay a down payment of some sort, but it makes sense.

100%, they probably won’t do it unless you can prove you are serious about the purchase or you have a good relationship with them.
If you can talk your way into it they probably could arrange a test drive even without commitment, though the distance seems a bit far for that.
Dealers are there to do business, selling cars makes money if they stand to make a buck off you they’ll do what they can. (This is true for pretty much any business)
