Would I be crazy to DD something like this? If I were to replace the Jetta with something fun and a beater truck.........
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Also. As much as I like owning a car that’s under warranty and gets 40mpg, I’m horribly bored of it. I yearn for more unreliable German engineering from the early 2000's.

That + manual explorer/ranger= Awesome
![]() 04/04/2016 at 21:50 |

There is very little too crazy to DD.
![]() 04/04/2016 at 21:52 |

That looks like a comfortable and pleasant car to drive everyday and think about driving again when you sleep.
![]() 04/04/2016 at 21:53 |
|
That might be a little far for a DD. S4 might be ok..... but this...... You’re insane.
![]() 04/04/2016 at 21:54 |

This is idiotic in all the right ways.
![]() 04/04/2016 at 21:54 |

One thing...
IMS bearing. The flat six in the non turbo 996 is a grenade without a pin.

Out of curiosity since you’re looking at Porsches, what about a Cayenne?
![]() 04/04/2016 at 21:54 |

Do it!

Luckily, a lot of them would have already had that service done.
I hope.

Out of all honesty, I’d probably end up with an automatic Silverado :P
Also, forgot to congratulate you on the no longer being celiac!

I’ve thought about a manual one many times.
But my dream car is a 911...
![]() 04/04/2016 at 21:57 |
|
I don’t think so. You could always switch back to a boring car if you wanted. As far as reliability, lets face it the 911 is probably more reliable than any current VW product. Maintenance will definitely cost more, but is a few extra hundred dollars a year not worth it? Some people spend $500 a year on shoes. Others on alcohol, etc. At least a 911 is still worth something at the end of the year.

If you have the ca$h/room for a fun DD and a truck, do it. It is extremely rewarding and you’ll enjoy the car as it should be, and have a truck for bad weather and when the Porcha is in your garage.

I’ve owned three Audis, I’m prepared for whatever.
![]() 04/04/2016 at 22:01 |

S4 is so incredibly boring compared to a 911. And 911s aren’t bad at all to daily.
![]() 04/04/2016 at 22:04 |
|
I’m considering a 997 when they come down a little more. Just have to prepare myself for new tires every year...
![]() 04/04/2016 at 22:04 |
|
But isn’t that why you’re in a new VW now?
![]() 04/04/2016 at 22:05 |
|
It is, but I personally would need more space than that, so it may work for him. I just don’t know. I wouldn’t daily a 911.
![]() 04/04/2016 at 22:07 |
|
Haven’t you had the Jetta for like 2 months?
![]() 04/04/2016 at 22:07 |
|
Good point.
![]() 04/04/2016 at 22:09 |
|
In low-res I thought the lede image was a 993... that might be too crazy to DD, for value reasons. But for that matter, what is the crazy factor with this 996? It will never have the cachet of some of the other gens
Disclaimer: I year-round DD an S2000
![]() 04/04/2016 at 22:09 |
|
People DD Mustangs all the time, which are 2+2 with limited trunk space, just like a 911. I say, why not? Esp if you have a backup car.
![]() 04/04/2016 at 22:12 |

I have researched deeply into the IMS and RMS issue. There is a guy in Florida with a proper fix for both for not an unreasonable amount of money. I want to enjoy the most overlooked bargain Porsche BADLY.

I'm just not sure how much will fit in the frunk of one. And a S4 probably looks better to daily because it's a sedan that looks pretty normal to most.
![]() 04/04/2016 at 22:15 |

dont ask questions you dont want an answer to.
and this wouldn;t be OPPO if it wasn;t for choices like that. I completely suport that idea.
![]() 04/04/2016 at 22:18 |
|
The frunk will hold a backpack or a couple bags of groceries, not much else. As far as trying to be incognito, the S4 is the better choice. Then again, at least where I live, people tend to avoid getting in the way of nicer cars. Or they try to be more careful around them in parking lots. Anyone looking to cause trouble will single out an S4 no different than a 911.

Honestly if I had the money I’d do it, just make sure you dont need space and can rent out a u haul or whatever if you ever need it, and dat IMS.

My disclaimer: year round dd a 02 viper
![]() 04/04/2016 at 22:21 |

I don’t think it’s crazy at all pending a PPI from a trustworthy Porsche mechanic.
![]() 04/04/2016 at 22:22 |

Do it; I’ve been planning something like this as well, but I’m still in the saving phase
![]() 04/04/2016 at 22:23 |
|
I usually carry a bunch of crap around with me so I need space. But there are people who do daily 911s and I guess if it works for some, there’s no reason it won’t work for JKM.
![]() 04/04/2016 at 22:25 |
|
Great car, you should get one and won’t regret it! High mielage ones are often seen as better though. If you were to get one like this with only 50k miles, make sure to change the RMS/IMS bearing on it... It’s an engine out procedure, but it’s 2000$ well spent as it could grenade your engine if you don’t ...
![]() 04/04/2016 at 22:33 |

Do you have a family? Can you take risks?
You already know the answer then. Stop dreaming and just do it.
![]() 04/04/2016 at 22:41 |

About, I'll probably hold onto it even if I do get a 911. But I need a truck also...
![]() 04/04/2016 at 22:41 |

Yes, but I'm a little crazy.
![]() 04/04/2016 at 23:42 |

I yearn for similar.
![]() 04/04/2016 at 23:56 |

I agree with the statement that you can always go back to a boring car. Because you can very easily.... :(

IMS issues on these....
Better get a turbo so you don’t get those!
![]() 04/05/2016 at 02:26 |

Spend the money to get the “IMS solution” upgrade from LN engineering and it’ll be perfectly reliable.
If you take care of that, daily it and drive it hard and perform routine maintenance as I imagine you will, you won’t have any engine issues.
There is a 911 in my near future too.

Or
OR
you could buy ours with 16k fewer miles, our professional IMS service already done, maintenance history since ‘08 and in a more attractive color : )

BBI Autosports uses a Boxter with the IMS mod, some basic suspension upgrades, and a few durability mods and apparently people love it.

Honestly I've had the same thought. I've wanted something smaller and more engaging to partner with my Land Cruiser and have been eyeing these up. Ideally I would get an air-cooled, but I can't afford those anymore.

I’ve got a small business that requires a decent amount of hauling dirty equipment.

Trailer?
![]() 04/06/2016 at 15:45 |

That’s a possibility.
But the other thing is that I’m not the only person who’d be driving the truck if I were to get one and I’d rather not have other people driving my new DD. Plus none of them know how to drive manual.

Shouldn’t be too bad.
