With the Cherokee and Renegade out, why are people still buying the Compass and Patriot?

fleet sales... I hope..

People want to say “I own a Jeep©” and be a part of that #jeeplyfe without paying the premium price tag of a Wrangler or Grand Cherokee.

Because some men just want to watch the world burn Master Bruce.

Rentals, fleets, people who want Chrysler Quality instead of Fiat Quality....

Don’t think so. I see them both all the time. The masses love shitty cars, as long as there’s a badge to make a statement.

Very good question. They actually extended the run to the 2016MY because of a spike in sales. It was suppose to wind down a year ago.
I see a ton of them running around my area, I dont know the model years though, since they have changed so little on the exterior in the almost 10 years of production.

But the Renegade and Cherokee exist for those people and also happen to be much better in pretty much every way.

Hardcore rebates. There’s up to $8000 (nobody qualifies for all of them though) in total rebates on the Compass and Patriot.

Not surprised to see the patriot sales are down but who the fuck is buying the compass. Sales are actually up! That thing is a huge piece of shit and everyone bought one in white. Terrible color for that car.

Damn, that would actually be a really good deal.

53% sales growth is insane for such an old model

Because they’re very cheap, and people are stupid.
A friend of mine a few months ago came to me with a list of small SUV’s she was looking at, asking for advice. On that list was the Patriot. I told her, “If you buy a Patriot, I will fucking tackle you.”
She bought a Patriot. Predictably, it’s been a pile of shit that’s been in the shop many times.

CHEAP.

maybe rental fleets?
they can call these things suvs and charge more for them...
admission: i had to look up what a compass was, and the 2016 isn’t THAT bad looking.
oh... maybe the new 2016 model means theyre giving steep discounts on the older? what years does the report cover?

The most interesting thing I see here is that Chrysler only has three cars. They are getting the Pacifica, but the T&C and the 200 are on their way out, and the 300 is ancient at this point. Why does Chrysler even exist anymore?

First column is March 2016, and that facelift is from 2011 so there is no older model.

They probably won’t be around that much longer at this rate.

Aaaaaagh I got “upgraded” to a Patriot once, from the Lincoln I reserved. Upgrade, my ass. By far the worst thing I’ve ever driven.

Not at those prices.

Suuurre... “won’t be around much longer”... with sales up 9% overall YTD and up 8% in March.
Increasing overall sales is a definite sign the company will be “gone” soon...

They exist because many people buy what they sell and they’re making money. Matter of fact, on a YTD basis, they sold 9% more units compared to last year. And the stuff that is selling well for them is also stuff that has higher margins:

You see the Compass/Patriot as a crappy SUV.
But it’s actually a dirt-cheap FWD/AWD station wagon where you get a lot of space for the money.
![]() 04/04/2016 at 18:50 |

The Chrysler brand is down 20% YTD with aging models. The upcoming Pacifica is the only thing they have going for them.

I never said they were crappy. It’s just uncommon for models that old with newer (and measurably better) options from the same company to be selling that well.
![]() 04/04/2016 at 20:17 |

Well many others say they are crappy.
When I was at the auto show last month, while many other models may be better, if you want something in a hatchback/wagon body style, the trunk is tiny compared the Compass/Patriot.
Here is the Compass’ trunk:
And compare that to the trunks of other small/cheap CUVs like the Nissan Juke, Chevy Trax and Mazda CX-3 (pay attention to how close the tops of the back seats are to the back of the car):
For trunk space/utility, the older Compass/Patriot are better than most of the ‘cheap CUV’ competition... and are the same price or cheaper.

There’s also a new Chrysler 100 coming.
But yeah, the Chrysler brand needs help. The FIAT brand too.
The Chrysler brand is hurting because they have no SUVs, CUVs or trucks... the 3 things that are hot right now
They need a replacement for the 200 and need to add a CUV or two.
Personally I think FCA should do a joint venture with Mitsubishi to make a replacement for the Lancer/200. Then, build a new PT Cruiser off of the same platform and target it at the smaller CUV segment. And before you say the PT Cruiser sucked, in reality, it was a huge hit that was in production for 9 model years and many people loved it. People only started saying it sucked after it had been in production mostly unchanged for 6 years or so with only one minor refresh. I think a modern PT with a good automatic transmission, comfortable seats and a smooth ride (the 3 biggest weaknesses the PT had) would do well.
Then make a new “Chrysler Journey” larger CUV based on the new Pacifica.
At least that’s what I’d do with Chrysler if I was in charge...

Agreed. Chrysler has to have some sort of SUV/CUV. You can’t be a successful mainstream manufacturer without one. They could just reskin the Cherokee and they would have a competitive product. I think they made a huge mistake allowing the PT Cruiser to die out instead of replacing it.
