Between here on Oppo and the FP there have now been about a billion posts about watch this guy turn these Jettas into VolksCaminos with a Sawzall or something to that effect. I want to know why this is even a thing. Is there something about El Camini-all the things that I don’t know about? More text below in case it doesn’t make the jump.

!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (and it !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ) They were fun enough cars without having to hack them up with a truck bed for some reason. Maybe not quite a FWD 4 door Miata but I’d like to point out the Mk 4 Jetta had about the same weight as the NC and the power of the ND which is...ummmm...oh. But I don’t really see the appeal of getting less utility out of them by removing two seats and a trunk so you can...carry dirt in the back of your compact what-used-to-be-sedan?

Less utility as a pickup?

I don’t get it either. While it was neat the first time, there are so many other cars I would choose before a Jetta. Something reliable at least, something Japanese.

If it can’t move a couch it’s not really all that useful IMO.

I really want to do this to one and see if you could make it AWD with stuff from a R32 golf .

I don’t think they’re camino-izing, I think it’s a homage to the original VW Rabbit Caddy.

In Mexico the market for a compact pickup is quite popular, as most companies buy them as company cars because tax on a truck is much cheaper than for a car.

Things like the Ram 700 (Which is a Fiat) or this Volkswagen Saviero, which is a VW Gol with a bed.

They even make a 4 seater version:

‘Cause I want one of these -

But I can’t afford to import one. I think the Jetta truck is cool. I’d drive the hell out of one. But, I find that given the option, I would rather spend $5k on something other than that.

Is there something you don’t know about el camini? Yes. This isn’t a new phenomena at all.

Only reason this Jetta thing is a thing right now is because there’s a video of its creation.
