Excellent choice, sir, if you don’t mind my saying so!
It is a lovely beginning, so evocative.
I understand that what you see in the film is a composite of various roads in the area (basically the Cols du Petit Saint-Bernard and Grand Saint-Bernard). Certainly the Col du Petit Saint-Bernard is a beautiful way of going from France into Italy (Aosta). I’ve gone through them a couple of times without realising they were the ones in The Italian Job, damn*.
Incidentally, I have always wondered whether the fiery ending of Vanishing Point (1971) was somehow inspired by this scene (The Italian Job was released in 1969).
(*) Next time I’ll take a 75 Twin Spark. Obviously no Miura but at least it has a proper Italian heart.

My inner 12 year old will always prefer the Cannonball Run open, but this is the correct answer.

One of the best intros of all-time, and probably the best car-themed one. I read somewhere that they used an already crashed Miura for the end of this scene, so kudos to them for not smashing up what would now be probably a 7 figure car.

Italy is pure magic. On the way back, the first time I went, we were slowing down to stop at the toll booths just before entering France - and suddenly there was this fluorescent green blur on the lane to our right, cracking and popping. It was a verde chiaro Miura.
We also managed to find a sorry looking but solid and mostly complete Fulvia 1.3 Rallye in a little village in Tuscany. Man, that was hard to leave there...
