This makes sense to me now.

Kids still read books?

Well I do. Kinda sort of.

Minecraft is a decent game, but some of the marketing has gone way to far.

My kids would be all over that. They read over their breakfasts (English books) and then go to a French-speaking Belgian school during the day.

Agreed but I'm surprised how long it's been trending. I played minecraft for the first time at 10, I'm turning 16 this year.

We have gotten those books for our boys, though they never read them. The series was written by a mom who wanted to connect with her son who was totally addicted Minecraft. She writes stories using characters and situations inspired by the game. My boys sit and stare at YT videos of other people playing games like MC and Terraria. I’d rather they read these books.

Ten year-olds, man. It's all ten year-olds

Back in my day, we read Carl Sagan’s Pale Blue Dot and the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

I’m going to guess it’s a little more dramatic than “I mined until I had enough diamond to make a sword.”

It’s been really big. I haven’t played in a while though.

Yeah. Anything minecraft related is totally geared towards the 8 year olds whose parents will buy them anything.

The Diary of a Monecraft Zombie series is quite good, according to the 11 year old who eats all my goddamn burritos.

This is the book I always recommend to people. It really is a great book.

My son does that too. I set the router to block youtube during the week so he would focus on his schoolwork. What do you know? Better grades!

And Madeleine L’Engle’s “A Wrinkle in Time”, and Andre Norton, Piers Anthony, etc., etc.

I just tell my kids no YT, no video games during the week. They bitched a lot at first, but they’ve gotten used to it. Now they just watch TV. :/

I got tired of fighting with them about it. The network now shuts down for both kids at 8:00 pm. If they still have research homework to do or need access to the printer, they have to ask. All video sites are banned during the week and I have the network throttled for them so streaming anything is so slow that they don’t bother any more. :)
