Doors open in many different ways. To many, the proverbial “Lambo” doors are what define a supercar, whereas us gearheads know that the world of automotive doors goes much further. Thanks to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ’s suggestion last week, today we look at the many doors applied to cars throughout history.
For one, how can you ignore doors that have dihedral syncro-helix actuation and were created by a Swedish genius?
And of course, there are the very classic gullwings on the SLS and legendary 300SL
So what do you think Oppo?

Definitely Koenigsegg’s. I know it was your suggestion, but I’ve been fascinated with them for forever. There’s something very satisfying about them.

Not an OEM design, but the Disappearing Car Door does a better job of getting out of your way than any other setup I’ve seen.

I’m a fan of sliding doors, but those don’t seem to have made it onto anything except for vans.

I think the big idea behind it is to prevent door dings, and be able to fit in small spaces. My wife had a two door Cavalier, and the doors always seemed crazy long. I was often worried about door dinging someone.

But you’d think it’s small enough to fit under any short overhang to keep dry. By any means, it’s better than a G-Whiz.

Well the French also tried dual hinged doors on the magnificent Avantime, although the doors were still the size of aircraft carriers so the advantages of the hinge design were likely negligible.

Agreed. That and because they are so wildly engineered no one has put in the time or effort to replicate them, so it’s unlikely they will suffer the same fate as the overplayed “Lambo” doors.

I don’t think they’d collide. The window disappears into the door-skin, which is only, what, 30 inches or so tall? The width of the Mark VIII’s body is somewhere around six feet. Plenty of room for both.
The OEM doors, on the other hand, have a complete frame around the windows; no way would they fit.

I really wish someone would make and sell the T.25 and T.27. They seem like really neat little cars, and somehow better than a smart car. Maybe it is just the looks.

True, I guess I hadn’t realized how short the doors actually are in comparison to the massive width of the MkVIII, and the frameless door a la Subaru should work well enough, especially considering you don’t use it conventionally anyways so it doesn’t need the added strength for the windows.
