We have a long-time client, a nice guy who had a well-sorted if slightly cosmetically challenged ‘98 M3 coupe that he’d had from nearly new. I say “had” because it was sadly totaled through no fault of his own. He’s what I’d call a casual enthusiast, he can’t rattle off numbers or names or marque histories, I don’t think he does much car reading online or in print, but he does like cars and just wants to drive something with good power and handling that isn’t a shitbox. Currently he drives a 2011 GTI with a DSG which we flashed with Revo software, and he’s enjoyed it. It’s not been without issue though, and now that it’s well out of warranty and his son’s 2013 GTI is having its second intake manifold replaced, he’s looking for a replacement. He asks lots of questions, about everything, which is fine. I’ve had so many long Q&As with this guy, I seriously have his cell number memorized. Which leads to our conversation yesterday:
Customer : Hey, (long story about son’s car, worries about his car), what’s a good car to get?
Me : (This is going to be a long call) Lots of options, new or used?
Customer : I don’t know.
Me : Do you care if it’s as practical or small as the GTI?
Customer : I really liked that M3... anything like that?
Me : If you want another they’re out there, but they’re old enough that most you find will need some work to sort out so you’ll end up with over $10k in a good one no matter what. Also hard to duplicate that car in anything new.
Customer : Well...
Me
: Have you heard of the Subaru BRZ/FR-S?
Customer : No.
Me : Really fun little coupe, well balanced, good economy.
Customer : Good power?
Me : Not as fast as your GTI or M3.
Customer : Well, that’s no good.
Me : ...
Customer : What about Ford? That Fusion RTS?
Me : Focus RS? ST? Fiesta ST?
Customer : Yeah, that one.
Me : (DUDE...)The Focus RS?
Customer : Yeah, would that be fun?
Me : (YESYESYESYESYESYES) Um, yes. That would be a fun car.
Customer : Is that fast?
Me : (BRUH) Yes, very.
Customer
: What’s that other one you said?
Me : (AAGGHH THE RS IS ALL THAT MATTERS) The ST? Similar to your GTI, more power, fun handling, but the interior isn’t as nice. Good seats though.
Customer : I think that RS sounds good, should I check that out?
Me : (FFS YES MAN) If you can find one to check out, they’re not here yet. A little spendy for a small hatchback, but there’s nothing else like it on the market.
Customer : Oh, so I should talk to the dealer?
Me : (Uh that is how it works, I know you’ve bought new cars before...) Yeah, might be a good idea to get in line or get a timeline, I don’t know how many they’ll get.
(niceties, call ends)
BUY AN RS ALREADY AAAGGGHHHH

I’ll be watching for the article titled: “First Focus RS Totaled in America”

What’s wrong with the ST?
The RS is a risky choice due to all the choices, plus it’s limited. I’d wait until the 2017 model year, at least.

What would he think about an M2?

How is the RS risky? There are only a handful of options and no matter how you spec it, it'll be an awesome car.

Nothing, to me. I’d drive one.

I didn’t even think of that, he might like it. I don’t think to recommend new BMWs to anyone anymore because they fall apart out of warranty.

That’s pretty much it. Any time he wanted to upgrade his M3 to make it “tighter” or “faster” we had similar conversations.

I might drive one, but I wouldn't want to own it for the periods I tend to own cars.

Yeah, if he did track days I wouldn’t recommend it, but he doesn’t seem like the type.
It’s supposed to be the second coming of the E36 M3, so he should like it. Jason Cammisa liked it. http://www.motortrend.com/news/2016-bmw-…

The man sounds like a good fit for a 1 series. The 128i should be pretty similar in size and power to his old M3 or if he wants something quicker then a 135i is a good bet. You could always buy him a R&T subscription, ha.
