But when I look at today’s republican candidates, I kinda miss this crazy motherfucker.

I remember when the GOP allegedly approached him last year and he was like, “Nah, I’m good."

That being said, DJT has the populist backing of the disenfranchised Republican base, it seems. The GOP should have stuck to financial conservatism instead of convoluting their message by tying financial policies with social policies.
Disclaimer: I identify as an Independent which leans left.

There hasn't been a financially conservative republican in office since Eisenhower.

Agreed. Eisenhower even warned us about the industrial military complex. Such foresight.

William Jennings Bryan did just that (in the elections of 1896, 1900, and 1908). He ended up being Woodrow Wilson’s Secretary of State because of it, though.

People were wary of Romney because he was a rich guy, now they’re about to elect a billionaire. The people get what they deserve.

I should also say that I am waiting for those sweet, sweet, trickle-down dollars to line my pockets, as the GOP promised.

Appropriate story here.

These republican primaries are unbelievably odd as an outsider (/foreigner). It’s a freakshow. Narcissist clowns or extremist religious nuts, that’s it. Sometimes a combination of both. All of them highly unlikeable. Why isn’t there a candidate who at least appears somewhat normal? Isn’t it customary to select a candidate who stands a chance to win?

John Kasich seems a bit normal, until he starts recycling Reagan era bs, bs that was proven as bs over and over again.

He doesn’t take part in the republican primaries.
From a western European perspective it’s an interesting thing to watch. From this perspective you’ve got a centrist party with a center right candidate (Clinton) and a center left candidate (Sanders). In the other corner you’ve got the ultra extreme people that don’t even remotely fit inside the broad scope of politics I’m familiar with.

Yeah the scale is way left over there versus the US (I follow european politics to a good degree). Over here clinton is pretty close to the center period. To give you an idea, most people in the french conservative party (the one Le Pen leads) would be considered middle of the road republicans here. Sanders would probably be a bit too conservative for some of the more left parties in europe.

Absolutely. From what I’ve read about Sanders, which isn’t all that much, he seems rather mainstream oldschool center-left. Most certainly not left-left, if you will. From a European perspective that is.
