I’m shadowing the Preventative Maintenance of a Bio-reactor. Help me from going insane.

what sort of super powers do you get from a bio reactor
![]() 02/23/2016 at 10:37 |

None, its used to grow up cells for processing. Maybe boredom.

what kind of cells? what processing

Unfortunately I can only give vague answers due to trade secrets. The cells are grown to contain a certain enzyme and product in a sense that is then harvested out much later in the process. This bioreactor just takes about 1000 cells in media and turns it into a few million, then it transfers to a bigger reactor.

thats kinda cool. can you say what they make with this?

I can tell you that the suites down the hall make Prevnar13, I think were doing clinical drugs in this suite so I can’t tell you too much, also I’m not inline with the process engineering I’m working on maintenance and mechanical changes.

clinical drugs was kinda the answer I was looking for. sounds like it could be an interesting thing. does it glow in the dark?

You should probably be paying attention to what they have to say. Which BioPharma? Roche, Regeneron, Gilead?
![]() 02/23/2016 at 10:57 |

No but Riboflavin does, which we use for spray coverage testing. I think the clinical drug is public but just to be on the safe side I wont mention it (there is a wiki page but schedules are pretty secret here).
Its an oncology drug and it started from these type of cells (generic)

They grab me when there is an issue, and I am standing right next to them watching what they do. This is a pretty small reactor only 100L so I can see all of it without moving.

I’m just busting chops. That’s cool. You can ignore my edit, just realized you work at Pfizer.

I like how you figured that out without me saying, I will say I have done work for one other company you listed. I’m a consultant to the industry.

I’m in the industry/direct competitor. You are stealing our sales in at least one of our products! Haha, but it’s all good. It’s cool to see others in the industry on this site. Love the work our companies doing for the betterment of society.

You work at GSK?
![]() 02/23/2016 at 11:15 |

No, we have about 50Bn more in market share than them.
![]() 02/23/2016 at 11:18 |

That narrows it down a bit... Got a hint? curious on if your a client or not of the company I work for.

Shouldn’t you be paying attention? That kinda sounds important/ could kill everyone.
![]() 02/23/2016 at 11:24 |

You company has an alliance with a company in Germany that has the same exact name as the company I work for. Bonus: The way I figured out who you worked for is the product your company is stealing market share from.

I am watching them for issues in ergonomics, pipe slope, or difficult gaskets. If I am too close I am actually in their way. For a PM like this every gasket, valve diaphragm, etc gets changed out and then the system is cleaned, steamed, and sterilized.

Bayer or Roche I would guess. I’m not familiar with all the drugs made here as I bounce from company to company depending on the project.

Fun fact, jeans filter out the bacteria from expelled from the gasses of farting.

Kind of disturbed that you know that.

I was curious about sterility in a clean room so I dug into the primary literature. Found a paper that involved scientists pulling down their pants and farting on petri dishes.

I want to see that paper...
