When I work on my vehicles I like to take pics and blog about it to share to the world :D

Your valve cover is leaking oil? You can fix it yourself for $14 and a couple of hours :)

Im changing the valve cover gasket on my 2000 Chevy S10 2.2. I’ve been noticing less oil and a small oil stain on the concrete. Closer inspection shows the valve cover is covered in oil and crud.

All you need is a 10mm socket, 10mm deep socket, 10mm wrench, 8mm wrench, 1/2 in socket, pliers, and I forgot what size socket for the ring clamps.

Kinja'd!!!

As you can see it’s wet and oily around the cover.

Kinja'd!!!

Im using a Fel-Pro brand gasket.

Beginning to remove the resonator. Theres a hose that connects to the valve cover that needs to be removed.

Kinja'd!!!

Remove the vacuum hoses and hold the throttle open and pull down on the accelerator cable and it pops out. Remove the 4 bolts for the throttle body. Place the accelerator bracket off to the side. Also remove any sensor wiring thats attached to the TB.

Kinja'd!!!

Good practice to seal any openings. Dont want a socket going down the intake :D

Kinja'd!!!

There is a steel cover that protects the end of the fuel rail. Two 1/2 bolts and a 10mm way in the back of the engine. No need to remove it fully as the plate sits on the threads. Literally a pain to get to.

Theres a bracket on the front with two 1/2 bolts to remove to access another valve cover bolt.

According to the Haynes manual I would need to drain the coolant. Nope. Took my pliers and bent this wiring holder tab back a bit to get to one of the valve cover bolts. Remove remaining valve cover bolts. May need to unplug compressor clutch for more room to remove valve cover.

Remove valve cover.... Removing spark plug wires would of made it alot easier, but those things would not move. So I made do.

Golden :D

When I removed the valve cover bolts I noticed how loose they were. The gasket is a bit flatter than the new one, but still pliable.

Kinja'd!!!

Cleaned the valve cover and the grooves the gasket sits on.

Kinja'd!!!

Added a small amount of gasket sealant to help keep the gasket on the cover as I fit it back on the engine.

Kinja'd!!!

Shove the cover towards the back under the heater hoses.

Kinja'd!!!

then move spark plug wiring over the cover.

Kinja'd!!!

Lift up a bit and feel to make sure the gasket is still in place.

Kinja'd!!!

Im adding blue loctite to the valve cover bolts. Torque bolts to 89 in/lbs or 7ft/lbs in a criss cross pattern to prevent warping. Bend heater hose tab thing back into place.

Kinja'd!!!

Good time to clean your throttle body while its out :)

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Make sure you put the accelerator cable back on. You wont be going anywhere fast without it :D

Kinja'd!!!

Put the sensor wiring and dumb vacuum hoses back on.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

I put the hose clamp back in place after i took the pic ^

Double check your work, make sure nothing is in the way of the fan, reconnect battery, check oil and make note of level and start engine. Check for any leaks while the engine is warming up.

Test drive, check for leaks and check oil level. If all is fine then you done a great job! :D

*Correct way to fix any engine related problem in a S10.* Put a V8 in it.

Just be glad you don’t have a transverse V6!

Thank you so much for sharing. I was having issues removing the bolt that sits below the cooler holder tab. I will use your method to finish the job. One questions, Can you tell me if your valve cover is missing a bolt? (bolt right under the throttle body). I cannot remember if I had a bolt or is it meant to be like that. Thank again!

I think its ment to be like that. These engines are also used in the cavalier, so maybe something would be bolted there and not the s10.

So... I broke my cover bolts by using 89 lbs./ft. I’m stuck with two bolts on the front of the cover. Any ideas how to remove them. I thought about drilling a hole in the middle, but they’re too small. For now I have to run my truck like this even though it’s a bad idea. It’s my only car.

I sure hope you mean 89 inch pounds. Which is about 7 foot pounds. Of course those tiny bolts will break. You will have to drill and retap the holes.

Yes, I meant to say 89 in-lbs. I double check the torque spec, because I felt 89 was excessive for the size of the bolt.

Do you know the size or can you recommend a product number to replace the valve cover bolts? Thank you.
