My dad said he’ll give me his old rusty 1995 Nissan D21 Hardbody king cab 4x4. Problem is the gas tank and the sending unit are bad. I can’t find any up here in Wisconsin. I called UPS Hazardous Materials contact line and they said you can ship an empty, cleaned, and vented gas tank on UPS Ground with no hazmat warnings. However, every salvage yard I call refuses to ship a gas tank because “it’s hazmat”. Even when I tell them I talked to UPS and it’s okay they go “we’re still not doing it.”
So I either need :
A) help with getting a tank and sending unit shipped to my house.
Or
B) help picking out a rectangular EFI gas tank from a more modern vehicle that I can mount in the bed in a custom enclosure.
Help me Oppo, you're my only hope.

Fuel cell?

AHH!!!! Flashbacks!!! Yeah, my uncle has an Illinois hardbody, had the exact same issue. I think we got one from a scrapper in SC or something? We didn’t get anybody to ship one - that whole scrapyard liability thing is sounding really familiar.

I vote fuel cell

UShip maybe?

Can you get a fuel cell and sending unit for under $150? Because I could get a complete 27 gal. 2006 Ford truck tank and sender for that.

Shipping on an OEM gas tank will be insane. Why not just buy this?

It doesn't have a fuel pump.

Can’t you use it without a pump and just let the fuel flow out??? I’m not carb knowledgeable.

How about this?

Beer keg, yo. Beer keg.

The truck is fuel injected, not carb. The only fuel pump it has is in the tank.

But seriously, give these guys a call. They are cheap and may have a listing for your tank, not sure if they do pumps: Radiator Exchange 1-262-251-0540

Mounted on the front bumper like an old 60's gasser.

I'd still have to fit a fuel pump.

So all you need is a Walbro with this tank then? Its not like your only option is a factory tank... I guess I’m missing your point regarding a missing fuel pump.

Boy. You are picky!

They said “dealer part only”.

The motor is picky.

Well, a good quality Walbro is like $100, right? So we’re at $250 plus shipping. For $150 I can go to a local yard and get a Nissan Frontier tank and pump and bodge it into place.

That would work too!

Just buy any ol’ electric pump and zip tie it to the frame. Easy peasy.

Find one in Raleigh or Boone NC and I’d put it in a box for you.

Well, shit. I guess a trip to a pick-your-part is in order. See if you can find a truck or van with a square enough tank and a pump/sender.
My ghetto self would probably go the keg/boat tank route, and just wire up a cheap pump with some hose like we did back when we ran a Oldsmobile Firenza in the local demo derby.

There are a couple of big salvage yards in northern Illinois / south eastern Wisconsin, you may be able to find one there. It would likely involve making a drive to pick it up, but if they won’t ship, your only other option is new.
Avery's Auto salvage had some hard to find interior parts for a Honda CR-V I was repairing. Weird splatter on them though...

Nearest pick a part is Wallys in Oshkosh.
Tj's in Rapids would sell me a Frontier tank and sender for $150 plus tax shipped (he uses Speedy Delivery).

Closest to Raleigh is in Elm City at Cox Auto Salvage.
Closest to Boone is in Dallas at Strawberry Motor Co. Inc.

My roommate's Celica has went through 3 frame-mount Napa electric fuel pumps in a year. I'm gun-shy of them.

Elm is too far East. Not around Dallas too often. There are a few on my Craigslists. Have you looked for ones being parted out by you?

Check out this site. Its a large collection of scrap yards. Look under Nissan Truck. Plenty of tanks available in the $50-$100 range. They can probably bundle in a sender.

Or
C) take the truck and sell it in whole or in parts... then use the money toward buying a vehicle that isn’t rusted out.
Or
D) Bite the bullet and drive to the closest auto recycler and pick it up.

You're proposing I drive to Ohio for a gas tank for a vehicle I'll put a thousand miles a year on?
![]() 02/09/2016 at 17:17 |

I am extremely familiar with car-part already. It's been my primary tool in this.
![]() 02/09/2016 at 17:17 |

I haven’t, out of concern they would be just as bad.

Think of it as an adventure!
Hell... instead of going to Ohio, why not just go to California!
Make it a Gas Tank Road Trip Vacation!!!
