Why no steering wheel in the cockpit view?

It’s disabled because I use a wheel and its distracting to have a second set of hands flailing around.

Ah, I guess that makes sense. I haven’t played this one so I didn’t know what was going on.

I got this game just the other day. Your driving is so perfect, so controlled. Mine consists of constantly locking up brakes and running off the track before blowing the engine.

I’m getting there.

It definitely doesn’t always look that good, but I’ve been doing this sim racing thing for a while. Keep at it and you'll get there.

I’ve been semi-sim for a long time. Many many hours on Gran Turismo. But I’ve never delved deeper than that.

We’ll see ;)

Most sim racers try too hard when they’re learning. We drive too fast and eventually learn not to crash, which is backwards from how you would learn in a real car, on a real race track. Drive around at 7/10ths until you know the track. You can’t be fast until you’re confident.

Track knowledge, braking and turn-in points, and smooth power delivery are the what to focus on. Pick trackside reference points for when to start braking. Don’t use your throttle like a hammer. Squeeze up to full throttle. Once you know where you’re going you can start to anticipate how the car will react. Then you can start braking harder, later, and getting back on the throttle sooner.

I think it’s more fun to drive too fast. I play with the AI pretty low at the moment, drive a bit too fast, and enjoy myself. Maybe I’m not a good fit for a sim, but I’m having a good time.

I will take your advice. I’m sure it’s particularly important when I get to higher level race cars, where it’s not some fat Porsche and I can’t really hold a controlled slide out of a corner without a spin.
