One of my favorite sales tactics on Craigslist is a vague reference to some recent inspection. The last two people I asked for any documentation or other knowledge that could be gleaned from the inspection have responded with some sort of obscure rambling. My response of course is, “Oh well, let me just take your word for it that your 100,000 mile RX-8 is running perfectly.” Not really, it’s more like “show me the compression test results!”

If they mention a specific test (compression test, for example) you have a right to demand they produce it. If they say something like “runs great!” then you don’t. You can ask for a 3rd party inspection though.

I’m of the opinion that if you have enough confidence in the quality of the inspection or what was learned to mention it in the post, you should be willing to convey that information to the potential buyer. In both instances I also said I’d be willing to do the leg work and call or visit the shop that did the inspection.
