What is this bar on the hatch of this Subaru Outback? It looks like a shower assist handle. Any ideas oppo?

I have seen enough of these to convince me that 1) it was a factory option and 2) it was a poorly installed factory option. They always seem to rust where the bar and the trunk meet.

It’s an “oh shit” handle for skaters.

Subaru accessory from the dealership. There was one for the sf Forester (98-02) as well.. no factory holes so it screws right into the hatch- that would explain the rust.

Factory option liftgate bar. Primary purpose is to rust a pair of holes in the back of your car. Secondary purpose was to make it easier to open the liftgate, particularly when the back of the car was muddy/covered in snow & ice

One of the best accessories ever devised. It is just a bar to grab to close the hatch. Very handy actually, I had one on my ‘97 Legacy GT wagon and liked it a lot.

Factory towel rack option. Or for tying a rope to the back of the car to pull sleds, ski’s or snowboards to.
