I love this generation of Cavalier. One of these with a supercharged 3800 would be a great sleeper.

I find everything from that era of GM to be appalling, mainly on build quality and interior materials.

The torque of the V8 spells a quick death for the 4t65e-HD. Also they’re a bitch to work on/cram inside such a small engine bay.

And you can’t tune them (I believe). And a 3800 can easily be made to make more power.

I think it would make a terrific sleeper, but that’s got more to do with the fact that I think bland/terrible cars with huge engines are funny.

I had to road trip in a pontiac sunfire once. About half the vents were broken, and the turn signal indicator was also broken. This car was 2 years old and had <20,000 miles on it. Nope.

After the time/money involved you could just have a Camaro. Which isn’t shitty. My sister had a cavi (what she called it) of that gen, it was terrible.

Such a hateful car.

I’m 38. From the time I was 16 until about 2 years ago I’ve known at least one person who had a 95-05 J-body. Slow, noisy, and unpleasant all around. However, they were really, really cheap and made for a good teenage beater.

3800 swaps are dead cheap. Go find a wrecked Grand Prix GTP, Park Avenue Ultra, Bonneville SSEi, or Riviera, rip out the whole front subframe and ECU, fab up mounts for the Cavalier.

We put a supercharged 3800 in the back of a Ford Festiva for $30 worth of grinding wheels. Then it sat outside and rained in the intake and now the engine is seized but... whatever.

THIS COMING FROM THE GUY IN THE CROSSFIRE

And yes. Nobody expects a Crapalier to be quick. It’s cool in exactly the same way as a Cobalt SS, but even better because there’s no badging and no connections with ANYTHING sporty.

The Cavalier is made fun of a lot for being cheap and shoddily built. Which it is. But they’re stupid simple to work on and maintain and seem to just run on and on no matter how they’re treated. It’s no wonder the Cavalier and its Sunfire brethren are the most popular car of the trailer parks.

Of course it’s coming from the guy in a crossfire. I put looks first and the Cavi is one of the dowdiest cars. I dislike the 3800 too. 3 point 8 liters, forced induction, 240hp Yay? If you’re trying to be fast there are a lot better ways. Like a cobalt SS motor.

Also brobalt SSs aren’t “cool”.

Cool, no, but awesome yes.

That said if I was going for a Cobalt SS I’d rather have the sedan variant. In white. And debadged.

Kinja'd!!!0

Not really. Where as a flash and a pulley can get a 100 HP gain out of a 3.8, it takes a bit more to do that with an LS. Plus, some LS’s had AFM, and those required cam swaps to get any more out of.

Kinja'd!!! Smallbear wants a modern Syclone, local Maple Leafs spammer > Jordan and the Slowrunner, Boomer Intensifies
12/18/2016 at 21:55

Kinja'd!!!0

No, any LS tunable without any difficulties. How much you get out is another matter and entirely dependent on the situation, but they are all tunable.

And on AFM... that doesn’t make tuning impossible. Your gains may be much more limited without serious engine surgery, but you can still make noticeable improvements. Also AFM camshafts are not different... it’s the lifters. They can be pretty sensitive, they don’t like high lift or high RPMs. Or maybe you were thinking of VVT? The VVT versions of the LS did have different camshafts.

Just to be clear, I was talking about computer tuning, not tuning as in in-depth physical modding. The 3800 holds the cards there because it’s forced induction. That said, 100hp extra on a 3800 is just 40hp more than a stock LS4.
