She entered the turn lane normally, but then moved over till she almost hit a car in the thru lane, never even noticed them. Also sat at the turn arrow, of course.

Ah yes, the car driver who thinks they’re driving a semi/bus.

In their defense, modern compacts kind of dwarf old midsizers.

This right here, is my #1 all time driving pet peeve. I see it WAY more often that I should. Look, If I can do a u-turn in my land cruiser without going into traffic you sure as hell can do in your rx350/whatever. so annoying.

Is that her turn signal lit up? She should have committed to turning.

I can’t do a good U turn in my Abarth. It’s really embarrassing

Ah yes, the “I forgot the drivers seat isn’t in the middle of the car” method of positioning the car.

It is, and she did turn. She just either didn’t see the line, didn’t care, or thought a matrix is really that wide/long
![]() 11/28/2016 at 15:35 |

Gotta make sure you don’t cut it too tight with that massive trailer she’s towing.
![]() 11/28/2016 at 15:36 |

That’s almost impressive

The rare Toyota Matrix F1
![]() 11/28/2016 at 15:37 |

I guess, but a Matrix isn’t one of them. It’s hardly bigger than the Yaris I’m driving, I think it’s only longer

Have you tried tugging the handbrake?
![]() 11/28/2016 at 15:39 |

Isn’t it ridiculous? Even if I run up the sidewalk on both sides of the street I’m inches from my neighbors fence when I do a u-turn from my parking spot.

The ability to know where the edges of your car are without being able to see them is a dying art. When driving an unfamiliar vehicle, I will test my perception of the wheel locations when safely possible (rumble strips on shoulders, etc). My wife thinks I’m nuts, but I know where the edges of my vehicle are, and know where my tires are tracking.
![]() 11/28/2016 at 15:41 |

It’s wider, but I think the Yaris is too big for a compact too. My Dad had a Tercel growing up and my first cars were all late 80s and early 90s compacts, so everything’s a fatty to me.

whats not an art at all though is knowing when you are in your lane and lot and when it’s okay to be outside of it.

Oh. It sounded like she changed her mind.
I know that this might seem like a small thing to obsess over, but I really do believe that this kind of driving represents a fundamental incompetence to pilot a car. Keeping a small car like that between the lines is not only a necessary part of the job , but it’s super easy to do. If she can’t handle that, then I don’t know what to say, except that she should start from scratch and learn how to drive all over again.

Sorry, agreed there on the OP, just taking off where you started. It’s not just swinging wide out into a lane, it’s everything associated with positioning your vehicle related to it’s location when there are no visual cues. Following the markings on the pavement, however would be visual cues.

Looks more like she’s trying to lanesplit than forgetting where the center of the car is.

I will admit that it’s harder than ever to know where your car is in relation to your driving position (as the Camry dent will attest) but there is no excuse for this lane hogging in the left lane...unless you have a giant trailer, or are as long as a bus. I used to drive to school with tight streets and parking in this.
So I have little sympathy if jane can’t get her CR-V through a U-turn without taking my lane too.

I had a 500t as a loaner for a bit. Not as quick, but being able to actually whip around in tight spaces is pretty nice

It is on the outside for sure. Everything’s all bloated but still doesn’t have much interior room. This stupid Yaris has less cargo room than almost any older compacts. Still, that lane is wide enough that semis and dump trucks use it without going over the lines

Don’t you know you have to swerve way right to make a left turn and vice versa? I don’t know how many times I’ve almost been sideswiped by people in left turn lanes swerving right for some unknown reason, but it’s a lot.

I totally know what you mean. This is the kind of driver that concerns me as much or more than aggressive/reckless ones. Unpredictable and incompetent/ignorant makes for some very dangerous behavior done in a very benign way

Yeah, I kind of hate all new cars at this point. Too heavy, too big on the outside, too small on the inside, and no one seems to make a high-revving engine anymore. I wasn’t actually justifying their lack of spacial awareness.
![]() 11/28/2016 at 16:10 |

Fair enough. I’m with you on that, the high belt lines and massive pillars do make things extremely safe, but I hate how it’s making everything look, and it seems like madness when you get in something with a greenhouse like an old Volvo or BMW, or any old sedan really, and see how much you can see.

I’ve pretty much decided at this point that I’m never buying another new car again and that the newest I’ll probably consider is an third gen MR2. I figure there are ten to fifteen years between now and the time that Alissa Walker comes to take all of our cars and I’d rather enjoy those driving years. I’m looking at old Roadmasters. Shouldn’t be hard to keep one of those going til then and it can tow the racecar too!

I’ll buy a new car if Toyota for some reason decides to produce the SF-R and sell it in Canada, but that’s pretty much it. My daily is a 2006 and I don’t want any newer than that, I can actually still see out of that one really well.

I forgot about that one! I haven’t heard anything about that in forever and think it’s going the way of the North American S660, which is another car that I’d have been in line to buy. :(

Yeah the last I saw wasn’t very promising....the S660 would’ve been fantastic to see over here. Oh well, I could always import a Honda Beat instead
