This is Sophia. She’s 14. She enjoys peeing on puppy training pads instead of the litter box, and gets uncomfortably close with my gym shoes whenever I open up the closet (there are many, many sneakers in my closet but these are the ones I wear to the gym). We love her anyway.

One of my cats does the same thing. She’ll stick her whole head down into them if she can. I guess it is reassuring to know it’s not just her.

It’s a huge compliment - cats communicate with scent, and as those would be...erm...filled with your scent, that’s probably why she loves them.
That’s why they like to rub against you, or ‘boop’ you with their nose or cheeks, they have scent glands there, and rubbing on you or things that smell of you means they are marking their territory, claiming you (or you via your scent on things) as their own - your scent is comforting to them as it reminds them of you. :)
All that comes from us taming a feral kitten...you’d be surprised what you learn about their behaviour and communication in that situation, haha! :)
As for the peeing in puppy pads....that’s probably old age...easier for her to do than digging in a litter box, then covering it up perhaps? (Kitty arthritis...?)

My cat LOVES wet feet and chases me around the house after I shower.

It looks like she’s trying to cover your scent with hers. She wants to claim those shoes in the name of herself.
