My dad’s 11 year old XB is having issues getting into reverse. Any ideas of what is going on with the poor thing?
From a stand still it has issues going into reverse, as if something is just blocking it. The only solution we’ve been able to figure out is putting it into 1st, neutral, then reverse.

There’s probably something wrong with the transmission.

I don’t know much about this car specifically but I’ve owned several small manual cars with a similar layout. In most models you will have the shift cable attach to the transmission with a rubber bushing. When this bushing gets worn shifts get more difficult. Have you looked under the hood to see if you can spot where the shift cable attaches to the transmission?

Have someone shift through the gears and it will be easier to spot it. Once you find it watch closely as they shift to see if there’s play. There should be none. If you’re lucky this is all that’s wrong. New bushings are cheap.
Might look like this:
