Old and new for comparison. Old one spins freely and shows no sign of corrosion.
Blockage somewhere then? Got a feeling I'm going to be taking the whole coolant system out today :(

Red Volkswagen key?
100% it’s not a bad gauge?

Yeh for the Skoda.
Not 100% on the gauge, but that hot downpipe and cool radiator made me think flow. I dunno.

Well, on the plus side, now you’ve got a spare? (Unless you return it).

It could be blockage in the radiator, or the thermostat. Have you removed the thermostat, yet?

Thermostat. If the water pump is bad the engine gets hot super fast.

Flushed the system and the thermostat was replaced, even though the original looked fine. I’m getting a bit stuck!

I've replaced the thermostat and flushed the system, I'm clueless now

Na I need the gasket from the pack so I'm just putting the new one on. It can't hurt!

If there was a blockage you probably would have noticed it when flushing the system. So, I’m not sure. Did you test the thermostat by placing it in a pot of water and heating it up? You never know, the new one may be defective.

The old one was in excellentcondition, but no I didn’t test the new one. It’s easily accessible and I’ve given up for tonight, but once I’ve rebuilt the front half of the engine bay tomorrow, refilled it meticulously, and tested it again and it overheats, I’ll test the thermostat separately. I’m going to pull the sender beforehand, although I’m not sure of the likelyhood of that going wrong? Thank you for your continued help btw.

What happens if you run without the thermostat?

I haven't tried that yet, but once I've put everything back together tomorrow I'll test it. I'll let you know :)

No problem. I’m not familiar with these engines, but I guess one other possibility is a large air bubble getting stuck somewhere in the system. If that’s a well known problem I’m sure somebody somewhere has written about it.
