I didn’t know these were ever a thing...now I want one.
365 hp and 660 lbs-ft. Alison 6 speed. No DEF. I bet this thing gets mid 20's on the highway and teens towing a heavy load. I like it a lot.
EDIT: apparently a conversion, too bad I was hoping to find a nice used one someday.

Conversion prices are steep though. ~$25k not including the price of the vehicle. Awesome idea though.

This is a conversion? Impressive, it looked like a factory effort.

There’s a company out in Texas called Duraburb that does conversions, but this was never a factory option for this generation. The last one from the factory was the ‘99, and it had the 6.5 Detroit.

After a few years, they upgraded to Rolls Royce Merlins

even cooler, I wonder whos it is, there are only about 2 dozen people in my building that could own it. We had a 97 burb with a supercharged vortec 454 that was putting out these kinds of numbers (more hp but less torque) and that thing was a riot to drive...only it drank like archer.

8.1L 496 was factory though.

Yeah, basically a stroked vortec 454. The Guy who installed out supercharger had a supercharged 502 in his running 9 psi. That thing was out of control.

Shame that gen big block doesn’t share more parts with older stuff.

I know that there was a 2500 version, but I don’t know if it was a diesel.

Supercharged Vortec 454?!?!? That’s awesome! Also, they did make a GMT800 with the 8.1 Vortec. I’d love one.

I guess not, you could get it with the 8.1 liter V8, but no factory diesel.

Yeah, it was a lot of fun, and actually got better mileage than my cruiser does, though it did drink premium fuel. Filling that 45 gallon tank was painful.

Yep. I’ve heard that motor has a decent following and some aftermarket support in the marine world.

I wish so badly that these were factory.

I thought they were for a second, I was about to start hunting for one.

Well, I’m sure it literally had range for days.

yeah, once you got it on the freeway it was nearly 700 miles of legs. that part, and hitting the speed limiter like it was shifting into 2nd were a few of the things I really liked about that truck.

It would pretty much be my dream hauler. I love the GMT-800 plaform, and I’ve always loved and wanted a Suburban. A Duramax 2500 Burban would be the ultimate Suburban.

My family had a ‘94 Suburban until the transmission went out in the summer of 2006. It was replaced, regrettably, by an ‘06 Grand Caravan. That was replaced by a ‘15 Santa Fe (the bigger one) this summer. I miss that old tank.

You know what’s even better? A Duramax Escalade!
Edit: picture I have if it rolling coal won’t load.

those 4l60's weren’t so tough, the 4l80 in the 3/4 ton though, that thing was a bombproof.
![]() 01/13/2016 at 12:34 |

You could convert a 3/4 ton Suburban to a DMAX, but GM didn’t sell them to plebes from the factory that way.
![]() 01/13/2016 at 12:37 |

Yeah, since you have to get a 2500 Sierra or Silverado with the Duramax which hasn’t had massive front end damage, and those can be expensive.

Its still being produced for big boats today.
I drove a 23 foot ski boat with one and even though it was 5000 lbs dry and 7000 lbs with ballast it was still way too easy to spin the prop if you weren’t careful.
![]() 01/13/2016 at 12:58 |

I did not know that!

Yeah, the Yukon XL never had a factory diesel.
The closes you’ll get to that as OEM is an Excursion with the 7.3 powerstroke.
I have two friends that have them. They’re enormous and loud as hell (but in a good way). At 300k miles they’re still barely broken in, and will do 19mpg.

Definitely. It only had about 180k on it or so when it gave out.
